Albany, N.Y. - Alie Beauvais won two events and was a member of the winning 4x400-meter relay in leading UAlbany to a 105-89 victory over Connecticut in the second annual "Dogfight" men's track and field meet on Saturday, April 23 at University Field.
Beauvais was a first-place finisher in the 400-meter dash, reaching the line in 48.98 seconds, and also won the 400-meter hurdles in a meet-record time of 52.15. He placed ninth in the hurdles at the 2009 NCAA national outdoor championship. Beauvais also anchored the 4x400 relay that came from behind to hit the tape in 3:19.51. A senior from Hempstead, N.Y., he ran an unofficial 47.9 split on the relay's final leg. Peter Rowell, Ebube Abara and Jonathan Santana were the other relay members.
"I have confidence in my teammates and everyone did their part today," said Beauvais, whose team dropped a 122-78 decision in last year's inaugural event. "I gained a lot of confidence. I know what kind of effort it is going to take to run three 400's a meet over the next several weeks."
Fred Casimo, Nasim Siddeeq and Ethan Clary turned in IC4A-qualifying performances in the long jump, triple jump and 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively. Casimo and Siddeeq, a pair of seniors, were coming off injuries and competing for the first time this spring. Casimo won the long jump with a mark of 23-feet, 5.50-inches, while Siddeeq went 48-1.25 in the triple. Clary, a sophomore from Schuylerville, N.Y., eclipsed the IC4A standard by more than a second with a time of 9:13.61.
Mike Alleman was first in the shot put for the second consecutive year for the Huskies, who are ranked second in the Northeast Region and captured the 2011 IC4A indoor championship. Alleman, who was also third in the discus, had a winning effort of 55-feet, 7-inches.
UConn's Michael Rutt, a two-time All-American and an IC4A champion, finished first in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:53.63. Aaron King, who twice has won the Big East Conference heptathlon, was a winner in the 110-hurdles in 14.94. Noel James cleared the bar at 6-6.75 to place first in the high jump.
The Great Danes' Wilfredo de Jesus Elias and Stephen Hassard each won their respective field events and improved their distances as IC4A qualifiers. de Jesus Elias, who won Army's Dick Shea Open in March, threw a season-best 202-feet in the hammer. Hassard also turned in his top effort of the year by throwing the discus 160-6.
