Baltimore, Md. -- Freshman midfielder Jamie Kimbles scored the game-winning goal with two minutes and 12 seconds remaining as UMBC completed an improbable comeback with a 14-13 victory over UAlbany to win the America East Conference championship on Saturday, May 3 at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers, who are ranked No. 7 in both national polls, earned an automatic NCAA berth.
UMBC (12-3) trailed by much as nine goals in the first half before regrouping to capture their second conference championship in the last three years. The Retrievers, who were still behind 11-4 at halftime, scored four goals in the opening three minutes and seven seconds of the third quarter to jump-start their rally. Sophomore attack Matt Latham, who had four goals and one assist, scored on a man-advantage 24 seconds into the period. After Maxx Davis and Chris Jones netted unassisted goals, Latham came open in the middle of the zone with 11:29 left in the period.
The Retrievers, who were edged, 15-14, by UAlbany in last year's title game, would later run off three unanswered to close the gap to 12-11 with 9:53 remaining in the final quarter. Dom Scalzo hit an empty-net in a man-up situation after the Great Danes failed to clear the ball. Kyle Wimer, who totaled three goals and one assist, circled from left of the cage to fine the net, before Alex Hopmann ripped a shot from above the crease.
After UAlbany's Corey Small gave his team a two-goal lead with a blast from the left side, UMBC would score three times in a two-minute-and-nine second span to post its school-record 11th straight win. Latham cut to the top of the crease to finish off Terry Kimener's feed. Alex Hopmann, who accounted for two goals and three assists, drove from the right to send a low shot to far post that drew his team even at 13 apiece. Kimbles would connect on a 12-yard blast off a pass from behind by Davis to put his team ahead. UAlbany's Brian Caufield has an opportunity to get the equalizer, but his shot from the left went wide with seven seconds to play.
“It was a tale of two halves where we dominated the first and they dominated the second,” said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose team was meeting UMBC in the championship for the third consecutive year. “We weren't as aggressive in the second half. They dodged harder, got the looks they wanted, and there were a couple of penalties that hurt us.”
UAlbany (8-8) came firing out of the gate by scoring the game's opening five goals, including four in a stretch of two minutes and 25 seconds. Caufield, a freshman attacker, found the net three times in that sequence, and began the outburst by coming around the cage from the left.
Mike Ammann then connected from 10 yards in the middle after Small worked through the defense to deliver a crossing pass. Steve Ammann, who scored twice and handed out one assist, came out of the box following a penalty to force a turnover that led to Caufield's fastbreak goal. Defenseman Craig McDonald whistled a shot past goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins from 15 yards away to finish off a play in transition. Caufield completed the run when he again came around the net from the left.
UMBC's Wimer put his team on the scoreboard by shooting through a defender into the top right corner with 1:15 remaining in the first quarter. UAlbany freshman Joe Pompo answered with back-to-back goals in the final nine seconds of the period. He beat the quarter-ending horn by wheeling to his right shoulder after midfielder Jordan Levine collected a ground ball off the face-off and threw long into the offensive zone.
The Great Danes led by as much as 11-2 midway through the second stanza when Pompo tallied his fourth goal of the half. He deposited Levine's crossing pass from right of the crease with 6:41 to play. Latham and Kimener, the championship's most outstanding player, each scored before halftime, both assisted by Hopmann.
“That was the story of our season,” offered Levine, who had three assists and was voted to the all-championship team along with goalkeeper Brett Queener (14 saves) and Caufield. “We had six one-goal losses and that's the toughest way to lose. They attacked the goal harder in the second half. They made plays and we didn't and got to loose balls at key times.”
