HAMILTON, N.Y.- An early three-goal deficit in the first half was too much for UAlbany, falling to Colgate 6-1 on Wednesday, September 5. The Great Danes lone goal came off the foot of senior forward Maggie DeVerna for her first of the season.
Colgate (4-2-1) started the match off with a bang, rattling off three quick goals within the first 29 minutes of play. Senior captain Jillian Kinter led her team by scoring two of the three goals in that span with teammate Jenna Panepinto joining in with an unassisted goal inbetween.
UAlbany (1-3-1) cut the deficit to two, 3-1, when DeVerna would score her first goal of the season in the 32nd minute. Despina Psomopoulos would help contribute the goal by causing the turnover in Colgate's zone and dish it to DeVerna.
With a two-goal lead going into the second half, the Raiders added to their total with another three-goal run in a matter of six minutes from the 53rd minute to the 59th minute to go up 6-1. Colgate would get three different scorers in the scoring rout by Catherine Williams, Jenna Raepple and Caroline Brawner.
Colgate would hold advantages in shots, 20-13 and in corner kicks, 6-5.
UAlbany goalkeeper Jackie Ubert would play the first 62 minutes, tallying five saves on 11 chances and Alana Brennan would finish off the final 28 minutes, making just one save on the lone shot on goal she would face. Colgate goalkeeper Ashley Walsh would also play 62 minutes and make six saves on seven chances and would receive the win with the Raiders holding onto the lead. Emma Giegerich would finish the game and make one save.
The Great Danes will look ahead to their home opener against Canisius on Friday, September 7 at the Plumeri Sports Complex (7:30 PM).
