Queens, N.Y. - Jen
Leaverton scored in the 16th minute with what would prove to be the
game-winning goal, and recorded an assist, leading St. John's to a 2-0 win over UAlbany in
non-conference women's soccer action on Friday evening at Belson Stadium on the
first day of the NYC Classic, hosted by the Red Storm.
Jen Gibbons took a long diagonal pass from Anna
Torregiano, and tipped the ball to Leaverton, who found the back of the net to
give St. John's
the early advantage. The Red Storm continued to control the game offensively,
getting off 10 shots and four corner kicks in the first half. UAlbany
goalkeeper Dani Britt kept the game within reach for the Great Danes, making
two saves before halftime. Leaverton recorded her helper on St. John's second goal in the 56th minute, crossing
to Raelynne Lee in the six-yard box. Lee one-timed the ball past Britt to put
the Red Storm up, 2-0.
St. John's
(2-2-1) outshot UAlbany, 16-4, including a 6-3 difference in shots-on-goal. The
starting goalkeepers for both teams each played a complete game, with Britt
stopping four shots in the net for UAlbany, while Kristin Russell made three
saves between the pipes for the Red Storm.
UAlbany (1-1) will return to action on Sunday in the team's
second game of the tournament, taking on Hofstra at 1 p.m.
