UAlbany Women's Soccer Secures Home Quarterfinal Game With 1-1 Tie With Hartford

Albany, N.Y. - UAlbany's Maggie DeVerna and Hartford's Amelia Pereira scored for their respective teams, as the Great Danes and Hawks battled to a 1-1 tie in America East Conference women's soccer action on Thursday afternoon. DeVerna's goal was the first for UAlbany against Hartford since 2004. The goal also ended a six-game shutout streak for the Hawks, and was the first goal Hartford's Erin Quinlan allowed in over 624 minutes of play.

DeVerna struck in the first half, taking an assist from Shayla Bergeron in the 40th minute of play. Bergeron crossed the ball from right to left in front of the night, where DeVerna one-timed a shot into the left side of the net past Quinlan. In the second half, as the game approached regulation, Hartford got the equalizer from Pereira. Caitlin Alves passed the ball behind her to Pereira, who found the back of the net at 82:05.

The teams played two scoreless overtimes before ending with the 1-1 tie, the first for the Great Danes this season. In an evenly played game, Hartford held a one-shot advantage, 10-9, while both teams recorded one corner kick. UAlbany goalkeeper Jackie Ubert played a complete game for the Great Danes, stopping three shots, while Quinlan made five saves between the pipes for Hartford (13-0-3, AE 6-0-1).

UAlbany (6-9-1, AE 4-2-1) has secured a home quarterfinal game for the America East Championship, and will be the third or fourth seed, contingent on the Vermont-Binghamton score on Thursday evening. The Great Danes will close out the regular season on the road, visiting Stony Brook on Sunday at 2 p.m.
