Women's Soccer's Comeback Effort Falls Short in 2-1 Loss Against Siena

Albany, N.Y. - Cara Reilly netted a goal and added an assist in the first half as Siena held off a valiant comeback effort by UAlbany to post a 2-1 victory in a non-conference women's soccer match between crosstown rivals at Varsity Field on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Chelsea DeVerna scored for the third time in four matches to spearhead the Great Danes' attempt at a rally early in the second stanza, but the Saints were able to hold on despite being outshot by a 22-12 clip in the match.
Siena (4-1) capitalized on both of its scoring chances to take a two-goal lead before the midway point of the opening frame. In the 12th minute of play, Reilly received a pass from Susan Schneck and took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper Breanna Maggio by firing a shot to the right post.
After UAlbany failed to score on three straight shot attempts, the Saints came back the other way to double their lead in the 22nd minute. Lindsay Tegas sent a short pass back to Reilly in the left corner of the box, and the junior made an extra pass to Caitlin Cahalan. The freshman then went around a Great Dane defender and beat Maggio with an open shot from 15 yards away to give the Saints a 2-0 lead which they carried into the break.
UAlbany (3-5), which had a 13-7 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes, was able to cut the Saints lead in half early in the second frame when Chelsea DeVerna intercepted the ball from the Siena defense and blasted a shot to the far post in the 57th minute. With the goal, the freshman has now netted at least one point in four straight matches and leads the league in scoring with nine points.
The Great Danes, who have lost all five of their matches by a single goal, had plenty of opportunities to net the equalizer. Working from the right side, Chelsea DeVerna made a crisp pass to Katie Grant who charged in and sent a laser at Saints goalkeeper Laura Ettinger. However, the sophomore made the save by covering up the low blast before it could find its way past the goal line.
UAlbany, which fired eight shots on Ettinger in the final 13 minutes, continued to have chances to net the equalizer after Grant's near miss. After four attempts went wide and high of the goal, Nicole Berard and Maggie DeVerna each took hard shots within seconds of each other in the final minute which were blocked by Siena defenders. The ball was cleared out down the left sideline in the waning seconds, and the Saints survived to post their fourth straight victory.
UAlbany's Maggio made four saves on 12 opportunities in the losing effort. Siena's Ettinger stopped nine shots on 22 chances to earn the win.
The Great Danes continue their three-game homestand when Niagara visits Varsity Field on Friday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.
