Orono, Maine ? Senior Christine LaBelle's goal in the second minute of action led the University of Maine to a 1-0 win over the University at Albany in women's soccer action on Thursday, Oct. 2. The Great Danes outshot the Black Bears by a count of 23-14 in the match and had a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks in the second half despite falling for the second straight time to open America East Conference play.
After suffering a 1-0 defeat in its conference opener at UMBC this past Saturday, Maine (4-2-4, AE 1-1) got on the scoreboard early against the Great Danes. LaBelle dribbled to the UAlbany end line and cut across from left to right along the goal line. She was challenged by multiple Great Dane defenders before ending up just in front of goalkeeper Amber Maisonet. LaBelle then rifled a shot that hit Maisonet's hands and found its way in. It was her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
UAlbany (2-11, AE 0-2) had its best chance to score with just over 14 minutes left to play when Jaclyn Rosada fired a hard shot from the top of the 18-yard box. However, goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips made a diving save to her right which preserved her fifth shutout of the season and the 32nd of her career. UAlbany's 23 total shots and 12 shots on goal in the match were season highs.
UAlbany's Maisonet faced 14 shots and stopped eight of them in the losing effort. She now has an impressive .848 save percentage and a 1.40 goals against average in her five starts. Phillips saved 12 of the 23 Great Dane shots she faced to earn the victory.
The Great Danes will play their conference home opener on Sunday against New Hampshire at 1 p.m. on Varsity Field. The Wildcats, who defeated Stony Brook by a 3-2 score earlier today, are the only America East team with a perfect 2-0 record in conference action this fall.
