Albany, N.Y. ? The University at Albany women's soccer team dropped their season opener by a 3-0 decision against Colgate at Varsity Field on Friday afternoon. The Raiders' Josie Johnson netted a pair of goals in the victory.
The Great Danes (0-1) had an opportunity early in the first half to take the lead, but were unable to capitalize when freshman Teresa Boring just missed a diving header off of a chip from the midfield.
Colgate (1-0) broke onto the scoreboard in the 29th minute when Beth Clifford scored from a redirect off of a corner kick. Jillian Arnault and Liz Polido were credited with the assists and the Raiders would take a 1-0 lead into the second half. Johnson tallied in the 51st and 69th minutes to give Colgate the 3-0 win.
UAlbany recorded 10 shots in the contest, while Colgate took 15 shots. The Raiders also had an 11-5 edge in corner kicks.
Carly Sousa earned the win in net for Colgate, making six saves. UAlbany's Maria Liguori made two stops in the contest.
The Great Danes will return to action on Sunday, September 2nd, as they host Holy Cross in a non-conference match at 2:00 p.m.
