ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany fall athletics programs has earned two SUNY Scholar-Athlete honors from the SUNY System.
Honored for combining academic achievement with success in the arena of athletic competition during the second year of selection of the SUNY Scholar-Athlete Awards, the fall awards honor seven sports in Division I - football, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, and field hockey.
Leaders in the classroom and on their field of competition,
Timo Jansen (men's soccer) and
Alison Smisdom (field hockey) were honored with their respective sports' awards.
Timo Jansen - Men's Soccer, Junior
Jansen finished his junior season having tied for the most points on the team alongside teammate
Ander Castillo with 19 while finishing third in the America East with five assists and tied for third with seven goals and 19 points. In his second year as a Great Dane, after transferring into UAlbany from Santa Barbara CC in 2022, this past fall, Jansen accumulated a total of 27 shots with 18 on goal with two game-winning goals. He started in all 18 games with 1,492 total minutes. Following the regular season, Jansen was named to the 2024 USC All-Northeast Region and First Team All-America East.
A business administration major, Jansen finished the fall 2024 semester with a 3.93 cumulative GPA.
Alison Smisdom - Field Hockey, Senior
Smisdom is a highly-decorated student-athlete with several awards for both her athletic and academic accomplishments. A three-time NFHCA First Team All-American, she was named NFHCA Northeast Regional Player of the Year for the second time this year. In 2024, the Antwerp, Belgium native finished fourth in the nation in goals per game (1.05) and points per game (2.42) for the second year in a row. As a senior, she added a top 10 mark with six defensive saves.
An accounting and business administration double major, Smisdom currently holds a 3.57 overall GPA and is set to graduate in May.
This is Smisdom's third consecutive SUNY Fall At-Large Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
The Fall SUNY Scholar Athlete Awards recognized 20 student-athletes from SUNY colleges and universities sponsoring intercollegiate athletics at the four- and two-year levels who were nominated and voted upon by representatives of their respective institutions. Later this year, winter and spring sports winners will be chosen.
More than 14,000 student-athletes compete at SUNY institutions representing 53 different colleges and universities at the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division III/USCAA, and NJCAA levels and are eligible for the awards.
A formal announcement with all (Fall, Winter, and Spring) honorees will be published in summer 2025.
