Softball Prepares for First Home Games

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany is 14-6 with a 3-0 America East record.
  • The Great Danes began the season at NC State's Wolfpack Classic (Feb. 16-17). Accumulating one win in two games over Iona, UAlbany fell in both games against the ACC host.
  • At the annual Spring Games competition (Mar. 1-3), the Great Danes added a 4-1 record. 
  • In their first doubleheader of the season, UAlbany split the results against FDU (Mar. 9).
  • Moving on with the UMBC Spring Invite (March. 15-16), the Great Danes notched a 3-1 record with games against Niagara and Wisconsin. After a shutout against each team on Saturday, UAlbany added two one-run games on Sunday, including a no-hitter against Wisconsin.
  • During the doubleheader at UMass, the Great Danes earned two victories (Mar. 27).
  • Most recently, in their first conference series, UAlbany swept Maine with three victories, including one shutout (Mar. 30-31).

AT THE PLATE
  • Graduate student Caitlyn Mitros leads the team with a .429 batting average from 27 hits in 63 at bats. Mitros also leads with 17 runs.
  • Three Great Danes follow with batting averages above .300 - freshman Mary Kate Murray (.396), graduate student Maddi Petrella (.367), and senior Jordan Nastos (.344). 
  • Graduate student Morgan Petty owns a team-high 20 RBI.
  • Tied with four home runs each, Petrella and Petty lead the team in multi-base hits. Petrella leads with 12 (eight doubles, four homers) while Petty follows with nine (five doubles, four homers). 
  • Sophomore Deanna Grahek and Nastos have hit the only two Great Dane triples.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Graduate student Wendi Hammond continues to serve as the Great Danes' starting pitcher.
  • Hammonds leads with 78.1 innings pitched, eight complete games, 10 wins, and 49 strikeouts. 
  • Redshirt-junior Kate Powers maintains a team-low ERA of 1.24 and has gone 4-0 with 18 strikeouts this season. 
  • Junior Dominique Prevette has pitched for seven strikeouts in 18.1 innings pitched.
  • At the UMBC Spring Invite, Powers and Hammond combined for four complete games, including two shutouts and a no-hitter. Allowing just one earned run throughout the competition, Hammond ended the weekend with a 0.00 ERA while Powers tallied a 0.64 ERA.
  • In their AE-opening series, Powers pitched a complete game shutout for just the second time this season. She allowed only one hit and one walk on her way to a 0.00 ERA in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. 
 
ABOUT UMBC
  • The Retrievers are 14-12 on the season with a 3-3 conference record.
  • After splitting a season-opening doubleheader against Saint Peter's (2/16), UMBC went 1-4 at the UNCW Tournament (Feb. 23-25).
  • Competing in the UNCG Tournament (Mar. 7-10) and hosting the UMBC Spring Invite (Mar. 14-17), the Retrievers added six wins and four losses to their record.
  • Going on a six-game win streak, the Retrievers opened conference play with three wins against Maine (Mar. 22, 24) after tallying victories over Hofstra (3/19) and Coppin State (DH) (3/20).
  • Most recently, UMBC faced Binghamton for three road losses (Mar. 29-30).
  • Four Retrievers lead with a batting average over .300. Ella Squaires leads the bunch with a .391 batting average. Amaya Carroll (.342), Amya Lundy (.329), and Ashley Della Guardia (.319) follow.
  • Just below .300, Emily Riggs owns a team-high 26 RBI and five home runs. She adds five doubles just behind Jerzie Nutile's team-high six doubles.
  • Della Guardia is close behind Riggs with 20 RBI, four home runs, and four doubles.
  • In the circle, three pitchers hold an ERA between two and three. Kya Matter has pitched nine complete games with a team-high 90.1 innings pitched and 91 strikeouts. Nutile holds a team-low 2.43 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 46.0 innings pitched.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE RETRIEVERS
  • The Great Danes lead the all-time series, 46-22.
  • Throughout the 2023 season, UAlbany and UMBC met on two different occasions - three games in a regular-season series and two games during the championship tournament. 
  • During the regular-season series, the Retrievers won the split, 2-1. After the teams split the doubleheader, UMBC won an eight-inning game to win the series.
  • In both contests during the 2023 America East Championship Tournament, including the championship game, the first-seeded Retrievers earned the win. 
  • In each of the last two championship games (2023 and 2022), UMBC took the victory over UAlbany.
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • UAlbany leads the conference as the only undefeated team, 3-0.
  • Binghamton and Bryant are tied with a 4-2 AE record.
  • UMBC sits even at 3-3.
  • UMass Lowell owns one win in three league contests.
  • Maine is looking for their first America East win (0-6).
