Softball Hosts Maine for Three

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany softball team is set to host Maine for a conference series this weekend.

LAST WEEK IN REVIEW
  • The Great Danes went 1-3 last week with a midweek loss to crosstown rival Siena (Apr. 10) and a 1-2 record in a conference weekend at UMBC (Apr. 12-13). 
  • Redshirt-senior Kate Powers pitched 11.0 innings this week including a complete-game win against UMBC (Apr. 13) and compiled 10 strikeouts. 
  • Sophomore Taylor Quinn batted 4-11 (.363) with two RBI including a two-hit performance against Siena (Apr. 10).
  • Junior Sara Anderson went 4-11 (.363) and scored two runs this past week.  
  • As a team, the Great Danes defeated UMBC, 8-6, on Sunday (Apr. 13). 
 
GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany is currently 16-18 on the season with a 6-4 conference record.
  • After four weekends of tournament play, the Great Danes held a 6-12 record. 
  • Splitting a doubleheader at Army (Mar. 19), UAlbany fell in a doubleheader at Binghamton (Mar. 22) to open conference play.
  • The Great Danes answered by going 4-0 including a series sweep over Bryant for their first home games.
  • In the week of April 1, UAlbany went 4-0 with doubleheader sweeps at CCSU (Apr. 1) and against UMass Lowell (Apr. 4).
  • Most recently, the Great Danes went 1-3 during the week of April 7.
 
AT THE BATTER'S BOX
  • Four Great Danes are leading with a batting average over .300 - freshman Ava Beal (.341), freshman Kaitlyn Parisi (.333), senior Caitlyn Frederick (.329), and Taylor Quinn (.326). All four are ranked top 15 in the conference.
  • A killer on the base paths, Frederick leads the team with 23 stolen bases and 20 runs. Her stolen base total is good for first in the conference - she is leading the runner-up by nine SB.
  • After last week, redshirt-senior Victoria Vilarchao and sophomore Mary Kate Murray lead the team with 19 total RBI. Quinn (17) and junior Deanna Grahek (15) follow them.
  • Grahek is the only Great Dane to start and play in all 34 contests so far.
  • Grahek has totaled a team-high eight extra-base hits with three doubles, two triples, and three home runs. Vilarchao (team-high five 2B, two HR) and Quinn (three 2B, conference-high three 3B, 1 HR) follow with seven each.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Three UAlbany pitchers are sharing time in the circle - Kate Powers has 13 starts while freshman Hailey Errichiello has 11 and freshman Hayley Wieczerzak has nine. 
  • Powers leads with eight complete games, including three shutouts, and 83.1 innings pitched. She has a team-low ERA of 2.44, good for second in the conference.
  • Hailey Errichiello is close behind with five complete games, including one shutout, and 67.2 innings pitched.
  • Hayley Wieczerzak has pitched 52.1 innings but owns the team-high with 77 strikeouts. She has struck out at least 10 batters in two different games this season.
 
2025 WEEKLY AWARDS  
ABOUT MAINE
  • The Black Bears have started the season off, 7-29.
  • Playing in four tournaments, Maine compiled a 4-14 record before they returned north to begin league play.
  • Opening conference play with Bryant (Mar. 22-23), the Black bears went 0-3. 
  • Maine continued its America East schedule with UMass Lowell (Mar. 28-29), UMBC (Apr. 4-5), and Binghamton (Apr. 11-12) but has yet to earn a conference victory.
  • Competing in two midweek matchups, the Black Bears split a doubleheader at Stonehill (Apr. 9) after losing both in a doubleheader at Iona (Mar. 18).
  • Before visiting UAlbany, Maine will host Colby on Thursday (Apr. 17).
  • Immy Gie leads the team with a .333 avg, 23 hits, three doubles, and two home runs. 
  • Francesca Guerrera has a team-high 30 hits and five doubles. She leads the Black Bears with 19 RBI.
  • Keira Inman makes the most of her time on the bases with eight stolen bases, good for eighth in the conference.
  • Gabby Papushka is the team's power-hitter with a team-high in home runs and doubles with five long balls and seven doubles.  
  • Alysen Rieth has spent the most time in the circle with 107.1 innings pitched for a 4.96 ERA. She holds a team-high 96 strikeouts.
  • Madison Simmerman leads the Black Bears with a team best 3.30 ERA over 76.1 innings pitched. 
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BLACK BEARS
  • The Great Danes lead the series, 45-13.
  • UAlbany and Maine faced off six times in the 2024 season. The Great Danes swept the season series with six wins. 
  • Their latest matchup was a three-game conference series at home where the Great Danes secured a shared America East Regular-Season title. 
 
PICKED FIRST
  • The Great Danes were picked to finish first in the 2025 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll
  • UAlbany earned 23 points with three first-place votes.
  • Binghamton was close behind UAlbany with 22 points and two first-place votes.
  • Kate Powers and Mary Kate Murray made the first-ever preseason all-conference team.
 
2025 PRESEASON AWARDS  
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • After three weekends of conference play, Binghamton leads the conference with a 8-2 record. UMBC is right behind them at 9-3. 
  • UAlbany is on their heels at 6-4 to round out the teams with winning league records. 
  • UMass Lowell is close behind just under .500 (5-6).
  • Bryant has played to 5-7 after two wins against UMass Lowell.
  • Maine rounds out the conference at 0-11 still searching for their first win.
