Softball Readies for Final Week of Regular Season

ALBANY, N.Y. - The UAlbany softball team splits their final week of competition. After a single game at Colgate, the Great Danes will host Maine for senior weekend.
 
In honor of senior weekend, UAlbany will hold a ceremony to honor their five graduating student-athletes - Wendi Hammond, Caitlyn Mitros, Jordan Nastos, Maddi Petrella, and Morgan Petty.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany is 26-12 with an 11-6 America East record.
  • The Great Danes began the season at NC State's Wolfpack Classic (Feb. 16-17). Accumulating one win in two games over Iona, UAlbany fell in both games against the ACC host.
  • At the annual Spring Games competition (Mar. 1-3), the Great Danes added a 4-1 record. 
  • In their first doubleheader of the season, UAlbany split the results against FDU (Mar. 9).
  • Moving on with the UMBC Spring Invite (March. 15-16), the Great Danes notched a 3-1 record with games against Niagara and Wisconsin. After a shutout against each team on Saturday, UAlbany added two one-run games on Sunday, including a no-hitter against Wisconsin.
  • In their first conference series, the Great Danes swept Maine with three victories, including one shutout (Mar. 30-31).
  • UAlbany went 2-1 against UMBC to win the series (Apr. 6-7). After the single-game win on Saturday, the two teams split the doubleheader on Sunday.
  • During a midweek doubleheader, the Great Danes won both games at UMass Lowell (Apr. 9) before falling in a three-game series at Bryant (Apr. 13-14).
  • UAlbany split its two most recent conference series, 2-1. 
  • The Great Danes defeated Binghamton at home (Apr. 20-21). After splitting the doubleheader on Saturday, the Great Danes won the rubber match for the series win.
  • Last weekend, UAlbany defeated UMBC on day one (Apr. 27) before splitting the doubleheader on Sunday (Apr. 28).
  • UAlbany has added six non-conference wins with a doubleheader sweep over UMass (Mar. 27) and Army (Apr. 23) and single-game victories over Providence (Apr. 18) and CCSU (Apr. 25).

AT THE PLATE
  • Graduate students Caitlyn Mitros (.369) and Morgan Petty (.357) lead the team with their respective batting averages.
  • Redshirt-junior Victoria Vilarchao (.333) and graduate student Maddi Petrella (.322) follow with batting averages above .300.
  • Mitros owns a team-high with 45 hits while Petty leads with nine home runs and 34 RBI.
  • Graduate student Maddi Petrella has hit 11 doubles and seven home runs to hold the lead in extra-base hits (18). Petty follows with 17 (nine HRs, eight doubles). With five doubles and five home runs, Vilarchao also has double-digit multi-base hits.
  • Sophomore Deanna Grahek, senior Jordan Nastos, and Mitros have hit one triple each.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Graduate student Wendi Hammond continues to serve as the Great Danes' starting pitcher.
  • Hammond leads with 148.1 innings pitched, 17 complete games, 19 wins, including five shutouts, and 103 strikeouts. 
  • Redshirt-junior Kate Powers follows with eight complete games, 77.2 innings pitched, seven wins, three of which are shutouts, and 41 strikeouts.
  • Junior Dominique Prevette has pitched for nine strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched.
  • At the UMBC Spring Invite, Powers and Hammond combined for four complete games, including two shutouts and a no-hitter. Allowing just one earned run throughout the competition, Hammond ended the weekend with a 0.00 ERA while Powers tallied a 0.64 ERA.
  • In their AE-opening series, Powers pitched a complete game shutout for just the second time this season. She allowed only one hit and one walk on her way to a 0.00 ERA in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. 
  • Against Binghamton, Hammond pitched two complete games for the series win. Pitching just two walks in 12.0 innings, Hammond tallied a 0.00 ERA against the Bearcats.
  • In their most recent series at UMBC, Hammond pitched a no-hitter for her second of the season. 
 
ABOUT COLGATE
  • The Raiders are 21-25 on the season with a 7-8 conference record.
  • Playing in five early-season tournaments and a doubleheader at Florida State, Colgate earned a 10-15 record before starting Patriot League action.
  • Falling in all three games of their conference-opening series at Lehigh (Mar. 24-25), the Raiders swept Lafayette (Mar. 30-31) to hold an even 3-3 PL record.
  • After three losses to Boston U (Apr. 7-8) and a non-conference doubleheader at Syracuse (Apr. 10), Colgate went 2-1 in a weekend series against Bucknell (Apr. 14-15).
  • Continuing a loaded week of contests, the Raiders swept Le Moyne in a midweek doubleheader (Apr. 16) and split the series at Holy Cross, 2-1 (Apr. 20-21).
  • Most recently, Colgate swept Binghamton in two games on Wednesday (Apr. 24).
  • Kiley Shelton leads the team with a .352 batting average. 
  • Three Raiders - Quinn Livesay (.321), Adrienne Nardone (.319), and Jillian Herbst (.317) - follow with batting averages over .300.
  • Nardone and Shelton hold the lead with nine doubles. Livesay follows closely with eight.
  • Shelton owns the team-high with seven home runs and 36 RBI. Nardone is close behind with 35 RBI.
  • Having totaled eight triples as a team, Rachel Carney leads with three of her own.
  • In the circle, Bailey Misken leads with 144.1 innings pitched, 16 complete games, five shutouts, three saves, and 116 strikeouts.
 
ABOUT MAINE
  • The Black Bears are 4-36 on the season with a 1-17 conference record.
  • Maine earned their first win of the season at the Blue Hen Invitational (Mar. 1-3) after eight losses in the Kajikawa Classic (Feb. 9-10) and the Joan Joyce Classic (Feb. 16-17). 
  • After 14 consecutive losses, including two three-game series against UMBC (Mar. 22, 24) and UAlbany (Mar. 30-31), the Black Bears defeated Saint Joseph's (Apr. 3).
  • Earning their first, and only, AE win, Maine split the series, 1-2, against Bryant (Apr. 7-8).
  • Maine has since fallen in three conference series - Binghamton (Apr. 14-15), UMBC (Apr. 20-21), and UMass Lowell (Apr. 27-28). 
  • The Black Bears added a split doubleheader against Holy Cross (Apr. 25).
  • Katie Jo Moery leads with a .278 batting average. She also leads with nine doubles and one triple.
  • Gabby Papushka, Krista Francis, and Kenedee Giddens fill out the Black Bears' four triples with one each.
  • Anna Margetis owns two team-highs with three home runs and 14 RBI.
  • Two pitchers lead with over 60 innings in the circle. Caitlyn Fallon has pitched the most with 65.0 innings and two complete games. Isabelle True follows with 61.1 innings and one complete game. Following both with 43.2 innings on the mound, Alysen Rieth holds the team-high of 53 strikeouts.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BLACK BEARS
  • The Great Danes lead the series, 42-14.
  • Earlier this season, UAlbany swept Maine on the road. 
  • Throughout the 2023 season, the Great Danes and the Black Bears battled in four contests, including two during the America East Championship Tournament. After splitting the regular-season doubleheader, UAlbany won both games in the AE Tournament.
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • Binghamton sits at the top of the conference with a 13-4 record.
  • Bryant is close behind with 12 wins in 18 league games.
  • UAlbany rounds out the top three with an 11-6 record.
  • UMBC sits even at .500 in 18 contests.
  • UMass Lowell owns six wins in 16 AE contests.
  • Maine rounds out the conference with one win (1-17).
