Women's Soccer Rallies in Closing Minutes to Tie Binghamton

Score: UAlbany 2, Binghamton 2

Location: Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal, N.Y.

Records: UAlbany (3-5-2, 0-1-2) | Binghamton (3-4-4, 2-0-1)

Short Story: Selma Elverum scores twice in the final four minutes to force a tie with the Bearcats and steal a point in the standings.

Key Stats Head Coach Sade Ayinde: "I am really proud of our group for digging in and never giving up.  We started the game strong but when we allowed them to score, there was a shift in the momentum.  Meg and our back line came up with some big moments to keep us in the game.  Two big-time goals from Selma with some help from Brooke on the first one and working to finish the rebound off a Syd Kofton header.  Hopefully we can carry some momentum from this road tie into our pink game on Sunday at Casey."

How it Happened
  • The University at Albany made its first trip back to Vestal, N.Y. on Thursday since the Great Danes' thrilling America East semifinal round last season.  In that game, UAlbany pushed the top-seeded Bearcats to the brink before Binghamton advanced on penalty kicks.  In that game, the two teams combined for six total goals, two of which came in overtime.
  • Binghamton created a dangerous scoring chance early in the game, in just the third minute, when a low through-ball into the UAlbany box went by just out of reach of the charging Bearcats' forward and out of bounds for a goal kick.
  • UAlbany's defense held Binghamton without a shot for nearly the first 18 minutes, but In the 34th, the Bearcats struck first when Lauren Clark headed in goal a setup from Olivia McKnight and Grace Vittoria.
  • Binghamton led 1-0 at halftime, having outshot UAlbany 9-5 in the first 45 minutes while drawing five corner kicks to UAlbany's one.  Three of UAlbany's five shots, however were on target, a higher rate than the four of Binghamton's nine.
  • The Bearcats extended their lead to 2-0 in the 61st minute on a loose ball deep in the UAlbany box.  Samiya Reid was credited with the score after collecting the ball out of the chaos just off the UAlbany goal line.
  • With time winding down, Brooke Pickett received the ball up the left side and, once in the corner of the Binghamton box, drew the ball back towards the middle and to Selma Elverum.  The draw had brought Bearcats' goalkeeper Kaitlyn Willams out of position, leaving the net open for Elverum's second goal of the season.  This goal in the 86th minute made Elverum the first player this season for the Great Danes to score more than once, despite nine different players scoring this season.
  • Elverum wasn't finished there.  With three seconds remaining, following a loose ball in the Binghamton box, Elverum scored once again to tie the game at two.  The game ended in a 2-2 tie with the Great Danes stealing a point in the conference standings after trailing by two with just over four minutes remaining.
  • Binghamton extended their shots advantage in the second half, finishing with 21 while the Great Danes managed 11.  UAlbany goalkeeper Megan Hart recorded nine saves to keep Binghamton from netting a third and potentially decisive score.  The Bearcats also finished with 10 corner kicks, and the Great Danes settled for their one from the first half.
