How it Happened
- The University at Albany women's soccer program hosted unbeaten-in-2023 Maine for their second America East game of the season. The Black Bears were 6-0-3 in its first nine games, and UAlbany had tied NJIT on the road in their conference opener last week.
- Iola Cotter took UAlbany's first attempt on net in just the second minute, but her effort was blocked by the Black Bears' defense.
- In the seventh minute, Maine worked the ball into the UAlbany box. The Black Bears took back-to-back shots, both of which were blocked by the Great Danes' defense.
- Maine struck first, in the 12th minute. Abby Kraemer dribbled into the top right corner and drew the ball across the UAlbany box to Luise Reinwald, who one-touched the ball into the net to put the Black Bears up 1-0.
- Selma Elverum nearled tied the game at one in the 37th minute. After drawing a free kick deep in Maine territory, Olivia Piraino served the ball into the box. Elverum directed her header into the bottom right corner, but Maine goalkeeper Kira Kutzinski made a diving, one-handed save, to keep UAlbany off the board.
- In the 60th minute, Maine drew a corner kick. Julie Lossius served into A. Kraemer, whose shot was saved by Megan Hart, but deflected towards Kristiana Kelly. Kelly played the ball back towards A. Kraemer, who scored on the second attempt in the 61st to put Maine up 2-0.
- Maine added a third goal in the 66th minute. Emma Schneider played the ball into the middle of the UAlbany box for Kayla Kraemer. K. Kraemer's shot towards net hit off a UAlbany defender, which redirected its trajectory away from Hart and into the back of the net for a 3-0 Black Bears' lead.
- Iola Cotter broke through the Maine defense in the 76th minute. Her shot from just inside the 18 was met by Kutzinski, charging off her line, and deflected out for a UAlbany throw-in. Hart made a similar save on the other end on Maine's ensuing counter-attack, and Olivia Piraino had her transition shot saved on UAlbany's next possession in the following minute.
- Maine held on to win by the same score, 3-0. After a fairly even first half, in which the Black Bears held a 7-5 advantage in shots taken, Maine pressed their advantage after halftime, outshooting UAlbany 13-6. Hart finished the game with four saves, all of which came in the second half.Â
Next: UAlbany visits Binghamton on September 28.
