SHORT STORY: The Great Danes started scoring early and improved their game for the second and third sets in a sweep of Siena, Wednesday night.
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Great team effort tonight. We worked really hard on our defense and it turned out well. We were also able to spread the ball around offensively and hit for a great percentage."
KEY STATS
- Redshirt-sophomore Shynelle Woroniuk led the team with 10 kills and 17 points.
- With a career-high of six service aces, Woroniuk now shares the three-set lead in the conference.
- Owning a team-high eight blocks (three solo and five assisted), redshirt freshman Gabriella Karman now ranks second in the America East in single-match blocks.
- Junior libero Sthefany Carvalho led the team with 12 digs.
- All Great Danes tallied at least one kill except for Carvalho. Additionally, all Great Danes, except one, tallied at least one dig.
- Overall, UAlbany totaled a .300 hitting percentage with an added 12 service aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Great Danes started with three straight points before Siena grabbed six unanswered to take the lead.
- UAlbany worked to take back the lead, 9-8, just before they added a 7-0 scoring run with senior Elisavet Papageorgiou serving.
- Trading points for the remainder of the set, the Great Danes took a 25-17 win.
- UAlbany began the second set with four unanswered points.
- Going back and forth for much of the early part of the second set, the Great Danes scored nine straight points for a 20-8 advantage.
- UAlbany closed out the second set, 25-10, with a 5-1 scoring run that included two aces from Shynelle Woroniuk.
- The third set did not contain as many long scoring runs from the Great Danes but instead shorter runs consisting of two to three points with just two at four straight points.
- The first of the two four-point runs came early on to give UAlbany a 6-1 lead.
- After trading points and gaining a stronger point gap, the Great Danes added a 7-1 scoring run to take a 23-9 advantage.
- With two final kills from sophomores Anna Myhal and Tori Wilson, UAlbany won the set, 25-10, and the match, 3-0.
NEXT: The Great Danes will take the weekend off before heading to Sacred Heart for a midweek contest on Wednesday, September 27.
