Key Stats
Head Coach Sade Ayinde: "Today was a good, competitive match against a good Fordham side and I'm proud of this group for being able to come out with a win and another shutout. A great free kick service by Charlotte to connect with Devon's head to give us the lead early in the second half. Then our group dug deep to make sure we held onto our the lead while still putting pressure on Fordham. I hope we can carry this momentum into our next two matchups, as we know both Army and NJIT will be tough games."
How it Happened
- The University at Albany women's soccer team, after the cancellation of Thursday's game against UMass, returned to action Sunday afternoon for a matchup against Fordham, the first meeting between the two teams since the 2000 season. UAlbany had last ended a three-game skid with a 3-0 victory over Rider to close their early season three-game road trip.
- Megan Hart returned to the starting lineup in goal after missing the last game, and Caroline Mascone made her first start of the year on the midfield line. UAlbany drew two corner kicks in the first nine minutes of the game, one of which resulted in a shot from defender Charlotte Takacsy, which was blocked by the Fordham defense.
- In the 22nd minute, Selma Elverum caught Fordham goalkeeper Kayla King off balance, but could not collect the ball on a good angle on goal, but cut back to pull King out of position again. Elverum's shot attempt was deflected by the Fordham defense and out of bounds for a corner kick.
- Ashley Ladner, in the 26th minute and shortly after subbing in, received a through ball just behind the Fordham defensive line. Her shot attempt from distance missed wide left but drew King far off her line.
- The game remained scoreless at the halftime break. Fordham held a narrow edge in shots, 6-4, with two of their efforts on target. UAlbany, however, had controlled 56% of possession in the first half.
- In the 54th minute, Elverum recovered a loose ball in Fordham's defensive zone. Her shot on her approach to the net missed just wide into the near side netting.
- UAlbany broke through in the 57th minute. After UAlbany drew a free kick 40 yards from goal, Takacsy served the ball into the middle of the box. Devon Schmitt elevated to head the ball towards net, off the bottom of the crossbar, and into the goal over King's hands. It was the second goal of Schmitt's career, and her first since October 17, 2021 against UMBC.
- UAlbany went on to win by the same score, 1-0, with the defense allowing just three shots on target for Fordham, despite the Rams holding a narrow edge in overall shots, 10-8. Fordham's pressure in the second half resulted in three corner kicks, while not allowing one for UAlbany after halftime.
Next: UAlbany visits Army West Point on September 13.
