Head Coach Sade Ayinde: "This was a disappointing loss.  While we competed physically, our execution was off and Army capitalized on the chances they had.  We will hopefully learn and get better from this."

How it Happened
  • With their America East opener looming this weekend, the University at Albany women's soccer team brought a two-game winning streak on the road to their penultimate non-conference opponent of the 2023 regular season, Army West Point.  Both teams had won two-straight games, with UAlbany outscoring its opponents 4-0 in that stretch.
  • The Great Danes pressed their advantage early, outshooting Army 9-4 in the first half.  Olivia Piraino kicked off proceedings immediately, launching a shot in the first minute that missed just high over the crossbar.
  • UAlbany took four of the first five shots of the game, but only one tested Army goalkeeper Sage Strohman.  Army's defense withstood the early barrage from the Great Danes, before settling in and swinging momentum their way.
  • In the 28th minute, Army broke through when Keira Vesy set up Kaitlin Palaian on the left side.  Palaian's shot, low, beat UAlbany goalkeeper Megan Hart to put the Black Knights up 1-0.
  • Just before halftime, in the 42nd minute, Joanna Van Royen broke down the right side towards the Army net.  Twenty-five yards out she wound up her shot but slipped on her plant leg and the ball veered off target.
  • In the 51st minute, Melanie Hupp broke through the UAlbany defense on a through ball.  Gabriella Terranova, who replaced Hart to start the second half, deflected the original shot, but it landed right back at Hupp's feet.  She cut around Terranova and beat Charlotte Takacsy covering the goal line in support of Hart to put the Black Knights up 2-0.
  • Piraino, in the 70th minute, launched a cross in from the right side towards a charging Van Royen in the middle of the box.  Van Royen volleyed the serve right into Strohman, and then sent the rebound over the crossbar.
  • Terranova made a diving save in the 77th minute after Army drew two UAlbany defenders in the other direction.  The save kept the game at 2-0.  Shortly after, Selma Elverum created a dangerous scoring chance for UAlbany with a draw towards Van Royen, but the ball rolled through the box and away from the goal just out of Van Royen's reach.
  • Army added one final goal in the 90th minute, from Ariana Diaz, to bring the final score to 3-0.  UAlbany's two-game winning streak ended, and the Great Danes suffered their third shutout defeat of the season.  Offensively, UAlbany outshot Army over the course of the game 17-13, but only put six shots on target, three of which came from Ashley Ladner, making her first start of the season.
