Softball Heads to Florida for Spring Games

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany softball team is set to continue gameplay in Florida at the 2023 Spring Games in Madeira Beach.
 
Tickets are required for admission to the games. They will be sold online as a weekend or daily pass.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany opened the 2023 season in Conway, South Carolina at the Chanticleer Showdown (Feb. 24-26).
  • In a slow start to the season, the Great Danes tallied a 1-4 record at Coastal Carolina.
  • On the first day of competition, UAlbany fell against Saint Joseph's and the host, CCU.
  • The Great Danes opened day two with a win over Mount St. Mary's. After grabbing a 3-0 lead in the second inning, MSM tied the score at four in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Jordan Nastos finished the game with a single and an RBI for the 5-4 win.
  • The showdown finished with losses to Coastal Carolina (2.25) and Saint Joseph's (2.26).
  • In one weekend of play, Nastos leads the team with a .400 batting average in notching six hits in 15 at bats. Tallying six hits in 16 at bats, sophomore Caitlyn Frederick follows closely.
  • Tallying four hits, including one double, senior Morgan Petty owns a team-high three RBI.
  • Pitching two complete games, senior Wendi Hammond saw 18.0 innings in the circle with 12 strikeouts.
  • In the field, senior Maddie Petrella leads with 17 putouts while freshman Sara Anderson leads with six assists.
 
ABOUT LIU
  • The Sharks own a 6-9 record after three weekends of action.
  • Competing in the FGCU Kickoff Classic (Feb. 10-12), Bash in the Boro (Feb. 17-19), and Winthrop Garnet & Gold Tournament (Feb. 24-26), LIU has wins over Binghamton (2.11), Radford (2.18), North Carolina Central (2.24, 2.25), Fordham (2.26), and Harvard (2.27).
  • Through 15 games, Alexia Castro leads the Sharks with 15 hits, including nine doubles, for a .313 batting average.
  • In the circle, Kira Buckner holds a slight lead with 39.2 innings pitched. With three complete games, including two shutouts, she has tallied 46 strikeouts.
 
ABOUT SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA
  • After opening the season 10-straight wins, the Lions own a 13-2 record.
  • SLU won each of their contests at both the Lion Classic (Feb. 10-12) and the Mardi Gras Mambo (Feb. 17-19) before going 3-2 at the Easton Bama Bush (Feb. 24-26). 
  • Bailey Krolczyk leads the team from the batter's box with a .444 batting average while Lexi Johnson leads with three home runs and 18 RBI.
  • In the circle, Cera Blanchard (26.1 IP) and KK Ladner (27.1 IP) lead the team. Blanchard has pitched two complete games, the only two from each of the eight pitchers, while Ladner leads with four starts and 41 strikeouts.
 
ABOUT GEORGETOWN
  • The Hoyas are 2-10 on the season with wins over Bucknell (2.18) and Wagner (2.18).
  • GU saw action at the River City Leadoff (Feb. 10-12), Hampton/Norfolk State Tournament (Feb. 17-19), and UNCW Tournament (Feb. 24-26).
  • Kayla Dunn leads the team with a .440 batting average from 11 hits. Cameron Kondo has hit two home runs for a team-high nine RBI.
  • In the circle, Brooke Plonka has tallied three complete games, including one shutout, with 44 strikeouts in 43.2 innings pitched.
 
ABOUT CREIGHTON
  • The Bluejays hold a 6-8 record after three weekends of play at the DePaul Dome Tournament (Feb. 11-12), Texan Invitational (Feb. 17-19), and UTEP Invitational (Feb. 24-26).
  • Cayla Nielson leads the team with a .412 batting average from 14 hits, including four doubles.
  • Kaily Wilson owns team-highs with six doubles, four home runs, and 13 RBI.
  • Natalia Puchino has the slight edge with 32.0 innings pitched for 24 strikeouts. 
 
ABOUT MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE
  • After falling in their first game, the Blue Raiders tallied six-straight wins on their way to an 11-3 record.
  • MTSU has seen action in the UC Riverside Tournament (Feb. 9-12), FGCU Kickoff Classic (Feb. 17-19), and Georgia Southern Tournament (Feb. 24-25).
  • Laura Mealer leads the team with a .524 batting average and 16 RBI from 22 hits, including four doubles and three home runs.
  • Julia Garcia holds a team-high with five doubles while Shelby Sargent has tallied two triples.
  • With four active pitchers, Kamryn Carcich leads with 27.2 innings pitched and three saves. Keri Munn has pitched two complete games in five starts with a 1.11 ERA.
 
PICKED THIRD
  • The Great Danes were picked to finish third in the 2023 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll. 
  • UAlbany tallied 17 points and no first-place votes.
  • UMBC topped the poll with 35 points and five first-place votes while UMass Lowell followed with 20 points and one first-place vote. 
  • Binghamton, with 16 points, grabbed the final first-place vote. Bryant and Maine tied for fifth with seven points.

  • UMBC leads the conference with a 5-3 record.
  • Binghamton is tied with five wins but also holds five losses.
  • Maine is close behind BU with a 4-5 record.

  • After one weekend of play, UAlbany has a 1-4 record.
