Softball Heads to America East Tournament as Two Seed

ALBANY, N.Y. - Earning the second seed, UAlbany softball is set to take on the America East Championship Tournament.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany opened the 2022 season with three five-game tournaments. At the Winthrop Eagle Tournament (Feb. 18-20), the team collected a 2-3 record before tallying a 3-2 record at the 2022 Spring Games at Madeira Beach (Mar. 3-5). The Great Danes saw two losses at Towson (3/11) before the rest of the tournament was canceled due to weather.
  • Seeing five non-conference doubleheaders, so far, UAlbany has swept CCSU (3/16), Army (4/6), and Siena (4/21) while splitting the Colgate (3/26) and Marist (3/30) doubleheaders.
  • Starting conference play at UMBC (April 2-3), the Great Danes swept Maine (April 9-10) after going 1-2 against the Retrievers.
  • Since hosting the Black Bears, UAlbany has gone 2-1 over both Hartford (April 15-16) and UMass Lowell (April 23-24) while sweeping a doubleheader against Binghamton (4/13).
  • Most recently, the Great Danes fell in the series at Stony Brook (April 30-May 1). UAlbany took the second game of the doubleheader, 10-6, but SBU took games one and three. 
 
AT THE PLATE
  • Morgan Petty leads the team batting 44-117 for a .376 batting average and a .692 slugging percentage. The junior owns a team-high eight home runs and 40 RBI. 
  • Katie Falotico (.371), Maddi Petrella (.330), and Maranda Jimenez (.305) follow with their respective batting averages. 
  • Falotico leads the team with 15 doubles and four triples. Her .39 doubles per game is good for ninth in the nation.
  • Alexis Phillips leads the team, and the conference, with 32 runs. 
  • Six Great Danes have totaled double-digit RBI - Petty has compiled 40 for the team-high while Falotico (34), Petrella (26), Jimenez (22), Lové Drumgole (11), and Phillips (10) follow.
 
IN THE FIELD
  • Falotico leads the defense with 184 putouts; Petrella follows closely with 143.
  • Lové Drumgole leads with 76 assists.
  • Falotico and Drumgole have contributed to eight double-plays each to lead the team.
  • Six different Great Danes have seen the circle.
  • Wendi Hammond has seen the most time with 124.2 innings pitched and 95 strikeouts. The junior has pitched 10 complete games, including one shutout, with 19 starts, 1 save, and a 13-8 record in the circle. 
  • Briana Garrett and Maranda Jimenez follow, each tallying 37.0 innings pitched. Garrett owns two complete games, including one shutout, and six starts while Jimenez has totaled four complete games and 1 save with six starts.

ABOUT #1 UMBC
  • The Retrievers are 28-10 on the season, with a 12-6 record in the America East. After earning a 15-4 non-conference record, UMBC began conference play.
  • Hosting UAlbany (April 2-3), the Retrievers fell in game one but took the series with game two and game three wins. Playing Hartford (April 9-10) in the same way, UMBC collected a 4-2 record after two weekends of play.
  • Winning its next four contests, the Retrievers swept a doubleheader over Stony Brook (April 13) and Maine (April 16) before falling in each series' single game - to the Black Bears (April 17) and then SBU (April 27).
  • Closing the regular season, UMBC split both its series against UMass Lowell (April 30-May 1) and Binghamton (May 7-8) but went 2-1 to take the series victory in each.
  • Courtney Coppersmith leads the team with a .354 batting average while Anna Lonchar leads the team with six home runs and Sierra Pierce leads with 40 RBI and 10 doubles.
  • All of UMBC's active players have totaled multiple home runs. 
  • Kya Matter has seen the most time in the circle, pitching for 102.0 innings and nine complete games. She has totaled 166 strikeouts for a 15-3 record and a 1.03 ERA. 
  • Courtney Coppersmith leads UMBC pitchers with a 0.31 ERA and 176 strikeouts in 90.0 innings pitched. She has tallied 11 complete games, six saves, and eight wins.
  • In the field, Lonchar leads with 189 putouts while Shanel Stott has tallied a team-high 29 assists.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE RETRIEVERS
  • The Great Danes lead the series, 45-16.
  • Earlier in the 2022 season, UAlbany opened the series with a 3-2 win on April 2 but UMBC took the series with the following two wins, 6-3 (April 2) and 1-0 (April 3).
  • The last tournament meeting between the two teams was in 2017. The Great Danes took the 5-4 victory in 10 innings on May 10.
 
ABOUT #3 UMASS LOWELL
  • The River Hawks are 26-18 on the season with a 10-7 record in the America East. After earning a 15-11 non-conference record, UML started conference play hosting, and sweeping, Hartford (April 2-3).
  • Splitting the doubleheader against Binghamton (April 9-10), the River Hawks saw a win over Maine (April 13) before losing the series at UAlbany (April 23-24), 2-1.
  • The River Hawks went on to split a doubleheader against Maine (April 27) and take one game, but lose the series, at UMBC (April 30-May 1).
  • UMass Lowell closed the regular season by taking the series over Stony Brook with two wins and a loss (May 7-8). 
  • Becca Vaillencourt leads the team with a .321 batting average, a .414 on-base percentage, and 12 doubles.
  • Owning a team-high 35 RBI, Cayla Tulley also leads with eight home runs and two triples. 
  • Ryley White leads the pitchers with a 1.77 ERA, tallying 10 complete games with 122.1 innings pitched. Notching a 15-6 record in the circle, White has totaled 131 strikeouts and five shutouts.
  • In the field, Maria Moccia leads with 226 putouts and eight double-plays while Tori Mueller has tallied a team-high 67 assists.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE RIVER HAWKS
  • The Great Danes lead series, 19-15.
  • Earlier in the 2022 season, UAlbany took the three-game series with two wins and a loss. For the first and third games, the Great Danes tallied a win - 2-1 (April 23) and 4-1 (April 24 - Senior Day). The second game of the doubleheader went to the River Hawks, 10-7, on April 23.
  • The last tournament meeting between the two teams was just last year (2021). The Great Danes took the 4-3 victory on May 14.
 
ABOUT #4 BINGHAMTON
  • The Bearcats are 20-21 on the season with a 7-8 record in the America East. After compiling a 13-13 non-conference record, Binghamton started league play at UMass Lowell. 
  • After splitting a two-game series against the River Hawks (April 9-10), the Bearcats fell in a doubleheader at UAlbany (April 13) and in a two-game series against Stony Brook (April 16-17).
  • In three-straight three-game series, Binghamton took the series at Maine (April 23-24), 2-1, and swept Hartford (April 30-May 1).
  • The Bearcats closed the season falling in a three-game series against UMBC (May 7-8) but ended up winning their final game against the Retrievers, 10-3.
  • Alli Richmond leads the team with a .316 batting average, six home runs, 15 doubles, and 26 RBI.
  • Seeing a team-high 119.1 innings pitched, Allison L'Amoreaux has struck out 96 batters with eight complete games, two shutouts, and nine wins in 22 starts.
  • In the field, Alex Musial leads with 158 putouts while Makayla Alvarez owns a team-high 67 assists and nine double-plays.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BEARCATS
  • The Great Danes lead the Division I series, 49-12.
  • Earlier in the 2022 season, UAlbany swept a midweek doubleheader against Binghamton (April 13). The third meeting in the 2022 series was canceled.
  • The last tournament meeting between the two teams was in 2019. The Bearcats took the 6-2 victory on May 9.
 
ABOUT #5 HARTFORD
  • The Hawks are 16-30 on the season with a 5-13 record in the America East. After totaling an 11-14 non-conference record, Harford started conference play with three losses at UMass Lowell (April 2-3).
  • Falling in two series, but taking a game each, the Hawks faced UMBC (April 9-10) and UAlbany (April 15-16) next.
  • Stony Brook (April 23-24) and Binghamton April 30-May 1) swept the three-game series over the Hawks.
  • Hartford closed out the regular season with three wins, and a sweep, over Maine (May 6-7).
  • Jordan Nastos leads the team with a .346 batting average while Hailey Cassidy leads with 18 RBI and 11 doubles.
  • Mara Sczecienski leads nine home-run hitters with five home runs.
  • Julianna Kocenski leads with 139.0 innings in the circle, 77 strikeouts, and 11 complete games, including three shutouts. Caylee English follows with 100.0 innings in the circle, 45 strikeouts, one shutout, and five complete games. 
  • In the field, Cassidy leads with 310 putouts and eight double-plays while Paige Fedak has tallied a team-high 83 assists.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE HAWKS
  • The Great Danes lead the Division I series, 43-12.
  • Earlier in the 2022 season, UAlbany took the three-game series with two wins and a loss. The first and third games went into the books as victories - 5-3 (April 15) and 12-4 (April 16). The first game of the doubleheader went to the Hawks, 2-0, on April 16.
  • The Great Danes' second win, to take the series, was head coach Chris Cannata's 800th win at UAlbany.
  • The last tournament meeting between the two teams was in 2016. The Great Danes took the 7-1 victory on May 11.
 
ABOUT #6 MAINE
  • The Black Bears are 8-35 on the season with a 4-12 record in the America East. After grabbing a 4-23 non-conference record, Maine began the conference season splitting a two-game series at Stony Brook (April 2).
  • Continuing with two losses at UAlbany (April 9-10) and one loss against UMass Lowell (April 13), the Black Bears took one in a three-game series against UMBC (April 16-17).
  • Maine hosted Binghamton (April 23-24) and fell in the series, but found one win before splitting a doubleheader at UMass Lowell (April 27) and falling in a three-game series at Hartford (May 6-7).
  • Kelby Drews leads the team with a .305 batting average and 26 RBI.
  • Gabby Papushka holds a team-high 12 doubles and five home runs while Kya Enos leads with four triples.
  • Emily Reid (86.0), Alexandra Gruitch (67.2), Gabbie Siciliano (62.0), and Caitlyn Fallon (59.0) have seen time in the circle. Each has tallied at least one complete game. Reid leads with 51 strikeouts and one save while Fallon leads with three complete games and one shutout.
  • In the field, Izzy Nieblas leads with 305 putouts and 12 double-plays while Drews has tallied a team-high 110 assists and follows Nieblas with 10 double-plays. 
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BLACK BEARS
  • The Great Danes lead the series, 36-13.
  • Earlier in the 2022 season, UAlbany swept the two-game series against Maine (April 9-10). The third meeting in the 2022 series was canceled due to weather.
  • The last tournament meeting between the two teams was in 2017. Playing three games in three days, the Great Danes ended with a 6-1 victory for the America East Championship Title on May 14.
