Softball Set to Host Army

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany softball team is set to host Army for a doubleheader.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany opened the 2022 season in Rock Hill, South Carolina at the Winthrop Eagles Tournament (Feb. 18-20) before competing in the 2022 Spring Games at Madeira Beach (Mar. 3-5).
  • In South Carolina, the Great Danes went 2-3 with wins against Winthrop and Ball State and losses against Robert Morris (twice) and Youngstown State. UAlbany tallied three wins and two losses in Florida - beating MTSU, Georgia Southern, and Georgetown.
  • In their last four contests, the Great Danes are 2-2. They saw two losses at Towson (3/11) before the rest of the tournament was canceled due to weather.
  • UAlbany began 'doubleheader season' at CCSU on March 16. The Great Danes swept the Blue Devils with an 8-1 win for game one and a 14-4 victory in game two.
  • Ten days later, UAlbany hosted Colgate for its first home contest. After the Raiders took the first game in eight innings, the Great Danes came back for a shutout victory in game two.
  • UAlbany hosted Marist (3/30) for a doubleheader. They split the series taking the first game, 5-4, in eight innings, and the Red Foxes took the second game, 6-5.
  • Most recently, the Great Danes visited UMBC for a three-game series (4/2-4/3). UAlbany took the first game, 3-2, fell short in the second game, 6-3, and in the third fell, 1-0.
 
AT THE PLATE
  • Morgan Petty leads the team batting 25-65 for a .385 batting average and a .769 slugging percentage. The junior owns a team-high five home runs and 24 RBI. For her efforts, Petty was named the America East Player of the Week after the first week of competition.
  • Maddi Petrella (.349) and Katie Falotico (.333) follow with their respective batting averages. 
  • Petty leads the team with 14 multi-base hits, Falotico is not too far behind with 13. The junior leads with five balls over the fence and the graduate student leads with 10 doubles.
  • Three Great Danes have totaled double-digit RBI - Petty has compiled 24 for the team-high while Petrella (14) and Falotico (13) follow.
 
IN THE FIELD
  • Petrella leads the defense with 76 putouts, Falotico follows closely with 75.
  • Lové Drumgole leads with 45 assists and six double-plays.
  • Falotico, Maranda Jimenez, and Chloe Lewis follow with three each.
  • Six different Great Danes have seen the circle.
  • Briana Garrett leads with a 1.59 ERA and one shutout. Garrett pitched a complete-game shutout over Colgate (3/26), striking out three and walking none. She earned America East Pitcher of the Week honors for her efforts against the Raiders.
  • Wendi Hammond has seen the most time with 62.2 innings pitched and 56 strikeouts. The junior has pitched six complete games with 10 starts in the circle.
 
ABOUT ARMY
  • The Black Knights are 9-21 on the season with a 0-1 record in the Patriot League.
  • With wins against eight different teams - CSUN, UIC, Florida A&M, Western Michigan, UMass, Monmouth (x2), Maryland, and Hofstra - Army has fallen to San Diego State (x2), California Baptist, Southern Utah, Duke (x2), Northern Kentucky, Florida A&M, South Florida (x2), UIC, Western Michigan, UMass, Ohio State, Stony Brook, Binghamton (x2), North Dakota State, Lehigh, UConn, and Hofstra. 
  • Kayla Edwards leads the active players with a .320 batting average. Maddie Wilkes leads the entire team with a .348 batting average, going 16-46 from the plate.
  • Three Black Knights have totaled multiple homers - Madi Gilmore (3), Jolie Duong (3), and Leila Hurst (2).
  • Hurst owns a team-high 14 RBI; Gilmore follows with 12. 
  • Duong has seen the most time in the circle, pitching for 76.2 innings and five complete games. She has totaled 44 strikeouts, with one shutout, for a 4-7 record and a 4.29 ERA. 
  • Parker Llantero leads Army pitchers with a 3.37 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched. She has tallied seven appearances with 10 strikeouts.
  • In the field, Hurst leads with 138 putouts while Gilmore has tallied a team-high 49 assists.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BLACK KNIGHTS
  • The Great Danes lead the series, 13-8.
  • Most recently, UAlbany and Army met in their regular-season series on April 17, 2019. The Great Danes split the series, taking the first game (12-8), but falling short in the second contest (3-2). 
  • A sophomore at the time, Falotico led the first game with 13 putouts. 
  • Falotico also took the lead in the second game with three RBI.  
  • Drumgole, a freshman in 2019, made an appearance with one putout in the first game and three in the second. 
 
PICKED THIRD
  • The Great Danes were picked to finish third in the 2022 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll. 
  • UAlbany tallied 27 points and no first-place votes.
  • UMBC topped the poll with 35 points and five first-place votes while Stony Brook followed with 29 points and two first-place votes.
  • Binghamton (20), UMass Lowell (18), Maine (12), and Hartford (6) followed to close out the poll.

AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • UMass Lowell opened conference play by sweeping Hartford to lead the conference.
  • UAlbany visited UMBC for their first weekend of league play. The Retrievers took two wins while the Great Danes opened with a victory to halt UMBC's 13-game win streak.
  • Stony Brook and Maine split their series, 1-1.
  • Binghamton has yet to begin conference play.
  • Ahead of conference play, UMBC led the lead with a 15-4 record. Stony Brook (16-9), UMass Lowell (15-11), and Hartford (11-10) followed with winning records. UAlbany (9-9) and Binghamton (12-12) held an even win-loss percentage while Maine (4-23) rounded out the conference.
