Women's Soccer Falls at Wagner, 2-1

Score: Wagner 2, UAlbany 1

Location: Hameline Field in State Island, N.Y.

Records: UAlbany (1-4-1) | Wagner (3-3-0)

Short Story: Women's soccer turns up the pressure on offense but falls 2-1 at Wagner to start their second three-game road trip of the season.

Key Stats
  • Jasmine Colbert scored her third goal of the season
  • UAlbany outshot Wagner 13-3 in the first half, and 26-7 overall
  • Jada Colbert took 10 shots
  • Wagner did not take a corner kick all game
Head Coach Leigh Howard: "We're obviously extremely disappointed with today's final score line.  Our attack generated enough chances to put the game away early, but Wagner did a great job hanging in the game and staying persistent.  It's unfortunate to not come away with the result after having control of the ball for much of the game but that's also how this sport goes sometimes, and we have to turn our energy towards conference games now.  We've got a week to prepare for the opening of America East play.

How it Happened
  • With her first of five shots in the first half, Jada Colbert tested Wagner goalkeeper Sam Hughes in the sixth minute, setting the tone for the Great Danes' offensive pressure over the first 45 minutes.  Jada accounted for each of UAlbany's first three shots in the game.
  • Margot Nezaj broke down the left side in the 22nd minute, and her shallow shot attempt was blocked.  UAlbany took two shots in the next two minutes, one from Jasmine Colbert and another from Jada, both of which were saved by Hughes.
  • UAlbany saw a shot from Jada Colbert beat Hughes but ricochet off the crossbar in the 31st for what was the Great Danes' best scoring chance so far.  It was followed up on the rebound by Olivia Piraino, whose attempt sailed high.
  • UAlbany finished the first half having taken 13 shots, six of which were on target.  The Great Danes' defense held Wagner to just three shots in the first half, with UAlbany goalkeeper Sophia Chen making two saves.
  • Early in the second half, Jasmine Colbert stole the ball of a Wagner goal kick and ripped a wide open shot that missed just high.
  • Despite their deficit in shots, Wagner broke through first, scoring through a tight UAlbany defensive line in the 59th minute to go up 1-0.  Less than one minute later, UAlbany drew a foul in the Wagner box, and Jasmine Colbert converted the penalty kick to tie the game at one.
  • Wagner scored again from 30 yards out when their shot took an odd bounce by Chen to go up 2-1.  UAlbany had one final chance in the final minute, but Devon Schmitt's shot missed high.
  • UAlbany finished the game holding a 26-7 lead in shot attempts, nine of which were on target, and 10 of which came from Jada Colbert.  The Great Dane defense also held Wagner without a corner kick for the duration of the game.
Next: UAlbany opens America East play at two-time defending conference champion Stony Brook on September 19.
