Volleyball to Host Binghamton for Senior Night

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany volleyball team returns home for their final game of the regular season.
 
Stay after the game as the team celebrates the graduating class - Casey Brown, Anna Chalupa, Grace Cozad, Charlotte Macken, ShaLi Niu, Danielle Tedesco, and Regan Wright.
 
Masks will be required inside all buildings on campus.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany opened their home slate with the Crowne Plaza Albany - The Desmond Hotel Volleyball Classic on September 3. The Great Danes closed the tournament defeating Cornell, 3-1 on Sept. 4. 
  • UAlbany opened their season with a 1-2 record at the Syracuse Tournament (Aug. 27-28), defeating UB (Aug. 28), 3-0, for their first win of the season, before beating Marist, 3-1, on Tuesday (Aug. 31). 
  • The Great Danes traveled to Texas for the Texas A&M Invitational (Sept. 10-11) and competed in the Jayhawk Classic hosted by the University of Kansas (Sept. 17-18).
  • Closing out their non-conference season, UAlbany hosted Siena for a 3-0 match in the first-ever School Supplies Night (Sept. 22). 
  • The Great Danes began America East play with a 3-2 loss at Binghamton (Sept. 26).
  • UAlbany won their next three conference games, defeating Hartford for a 3-0 victory on October 8 and taking a 3-1 win at NJIT on October 10 after beating Stony Brook (10/3). 
  • Before defeating Hartford for a second time on October 17, the Great Danes fell at New Hampshire in five sets (Oct. 15).
  • UAlbany defeated NJIT in three sets on October 29 and New Hampshire in five sets on October 31.  
  • Most recently, the Great Danes bested Stony Brook for the second time this season (Nov. 5) before falling to UMBC in four sets on Nov. 7. 
  • Freshman Oren Abutbul leads the Great Danes offense with 265 kills and 2.68 kills per set.
  • Junior Malea Stanton and freshman Elaina Wamhoff serve as the team's main setters. Stanton leads with 635 assists and 6.41 assists/set. Wamhoff follows with 346 assists and 4.27 assists/set. Stanton is also second on the team with 20 service aces and 198 digs.
  • Senior Charlotte Macken owns a team-high on both offense and defense. She leads with 33 service aces, 407 digs, and 4.07 digs per set. 
  • Freshman Lilou Stegeman leads the blockers with 83.0 total blocks, followed closely by freshman Anissia Wong with 82.0. Wong holds a team-high nine solo blocks.
  • Other Great Dane standouts include graduate student Danielle Tedesco (second on the team with 233 kills and third on the team with 81.0 blocks), senior Grace Cozad (second on the team with 2.69 kills per set), and senior Regan Wright (third on the team with 193 digs and second with 2.12 digs per set).
 
ABOUT BINGHAMTON
  • The Bearcats completed the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 4-8 record.
  • Binghamton went 1-2 at the Towson Tournament at Morgan State (Aug. 27-28) before falling in all three games at Lehigh University (Sept. 3-4).
  • The Bearcats completed the Providence Tournament (Sept. 10-11) with a winning record, 2-1, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson and Saint Peter's University in just three sets.
  • Next, Binghamton played three stand-alone games before beginning America East play -  Siena College (Sept. 15) and Delaware State University twice (Sept 17, 19).
  • The Bearcats opened America East play with a pair of victories, NJIT (Sept. 24) and UAlbany (Sept. 26) winning both matches in five sets.
  • Binghamton continued with their conference schedule throughout October, facing Stony Brook (Oct. 1, 17), Hartford (Oct. 10), UMBC (Oct. 15, 24), and UNH (Oct. 29) with each match resulting in a loss for the Bearcats.
  • The Bearcats captured a victory against NJIT, winning all three sets (Oct. 31) before falling to Hartford on Nov. 5.
  • Binghamton's game scheduled for Nov. 6 against UNH was postponed.
  • Stefana Stan leads the team with 208 kills.
  • Kiara Adams serves as the team's main setter, totaling 600 assists this season. She also holds a team-high 23 service aces.
  • On defense, Emily Rail leads with 120 digs and a 3.33 digs/set. Anna Sprys leads the blockers with 52.0 total blocks, including 8 solo blocks.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BEARCATS
  • The Great Danes lead the all-time series, 33-13.
  • Most recently, Binghamton took a five-set victory over the Great Danes, their first victory over UAlbany since 2016.
  • Before their most recent matchup, UAlbany won eight consecutive games against the Bearcats, tying their longest win streak against Binghamton. The first eight-game win streak came between 2006 and 2009.
  • During the 2020 season, played in the spring of 2021, the Great Danes beat Binghamton, 3-0, twice. 
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • UMBC remains as the sole undefeated team in the America East with an 11-0 record. The Retrievers will host the America East Championship Tournament.
  • Stony Brook and UAlbany are tied for second with a 7-4 record.
  • New Hampshire rounds out the top four with a 6-4 conference record.
  • The America East Tournament field is set with UMBC hosting and UAlbany, Stony Brook, and New Hampshire heading to Maryland.
  • Binghamton currently sits in fifth with a 3-7 record while Hartford is in sixth also with a 3-7 conference record.
  • NJIT is looking for their first conference win with 11 losses.

WHAT'S UP, PRESEASON
  • The Great Dane volleyball team was picked to finish first in the conference in the preseason coaches' poll. UMBC and New Hampshire were voted into a tie for second place.
  • UAlbany added seven new players to the roster for the 2021 season.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Great Danes will head to UMBC for the America East Tournament, Nov. 19-20.
