Seven-Run Third Lifts UAlbany Over Radford, 9-2; Castro and Apostolina To The All-Tournament Team

Statesboro, Ga.- The UAlbany softball team finished the Eagle Classic with a convincing win against Radford, 9-2, on Sunday, Feb. 26 at Eagles Field. The Great Danes improved to 2-3 on the season and will have two weeks off before heading to Rock Hill, S.C. for the Adidas Invitational, which is hosted by Winthrop University. Charlise Castro with eight hits, including two homeruns, six RBIs while batting .533 (8-15) and Kylie Apostolina with five hits, four runs scored and batted .333 (5-15) made the Eagle Classic All-Tournament Team.
     Junior Brittany Schwieger (1-1) struck out seven Highlanders in seven innings and allowed just one two runs, all earned, while scattering three hits to earn her first victory of the season.
     Radford freshman Emily Norton (0-2) pitched five and one- third innings, allowing five runs on five hits, getting pulled mid-way through the seven-run third. Stephanie Dameron would come in relief for one and two-thirds giving up four runs on four hits. Norton would come back in the fifth to finish the game.
     After quickly going up 1-0, UAlbany in the third put the game out of reach that began with two quick base hits by Diane McDowell and Vicky McFarland. Taylor Franich drove in both with a two-run triple, followed by Katie Wambold with a single up the middle to drive in a run, Kylie Apostolina walk, Castro singling to left to bring in a run, Lauren Alcorn doubling to left that scored two, and finally Alexa Toole singled to left to drive in pinch runner Christina Patrick.
     The Great Danes would add an insurance run with Castro blasting a homer to left field for her second of the season.
