Field Hockey Takes 3-0 Victory Over Davidson; Taylor Luke Tallies First Goal of Season

Albany, N.Y. - Taylor Luke, notched her first goal of the season for what would be the game winner early in the first half en route to a University at Albany 3-0 win over Davidson (2-3) in non-conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Turf Field.

In the fifth minute of play, Christina Patrick placed the ball in play to Karlijn van Dijsseldonk who shuffled the ball to Luke as she took an angled shot into the lower left corner. Both van Dijsseldonk and Patrick had two assists in the match. Play would favor to UAlbany's advantage for the rest of the first stanza with eight shots and held the Wildcats to no shots or penalty corners.

Daphne Voormolen tallied her third goal of the season off the penalty corner with a straight on target blaze. Chantae Miller and Patrick would receive helper credits on the Great Danes second goal of the match.

UAlbany (5-2) would continue putting pressure on the net, but couldn't get it past the Wildcats' goalkeeper Sarah Fisher, notching seven saves. The Davidson defense would hold steady for a 18-minute span as two players received defensive saves, Steph Meador and Hannah Lawrence, in effort to keep the Great Dane goal lead at two.

Corrine McConville gave UAlbany a 3-0 lead in the 60th minute with a shot off the penalty corner deflected by a Davidson player high into top right corner. Katharina Helling and van Dijsseldonk had the assists. Davidson did not give up as they got a quick burst off the attack just a few minutes later when Gray Robinson took a shot with UAlbany's goalkeeper down. Brianna Schwoyer was in the perfect position to stop the shot near the goal line, giving her a defensive save and holding onto the shutout.

Great Danes goalkeeper Kristi Troch made five saves in the shutout effort. Nine UAlbany players would register a shot on goal in today's match. UAlbany also held a 18-9 shot advantage and 10-4 penalty corner benefit.

"The team put up a solid effort today," said UAlbany Head Coach Phil Sykes. " We are still making early season mistakes, thus not getting the extra goals early in today's game. Overall, we played hard and put in a solid second half to get the victory."

The Great Danes will hit the road for a six-game tour beginning at Hofstra University tomorrow afternoon. The next home match will take place Sunday October 8th against America East Conference opponent Fairfield.
