Softball Loses to Kent State and Radford in Opening Games of Highlander Classic

Radford, Va. - Hope Creasy hit two solo home runs to lead host Radford to a 9-2 victory over the UAlbany softball team on the first day of the Highlander Classic Presented by Comfort Inn and Suites on Saturday, March 20. The Great Danes also dropped a 3-0 decision to Kent State earlier in the day, as the Golden Flashes' Kylie Reynolds hurled her second no-hitter of the 2010 campaign.
Radford (10-8), which was designated as the away team in UAlbany's second game of the day, quickly jumped out in front by plating a run in the top of the first. A single up the middle by Sarah Himan scored Kristen Shifflett, who had a leadoff double down the line in left.
The Great Danes answered right back and tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame. Andrianna Walraven singled to center on a full count and stole second. Nicole Kothe sacrificed the junior over to third, and Gina Mason hit one of her two singles in the game to plate the equalizing run.
Radford, which won its first Big South Conference championship last year, exploded to score five more times in the second. Shifflett hit her second single of the game down the left field line to put the Highlanders ahead by a run before Nichole Beall and Himan clubbed back-to-back home runs. Beall's drive was a three-run shot.
Following a scoreless third inning, Highlander pitcher Chelsea Kelley hit three batters to load the bases with one out in the fourth. Lindsey Stout fouled out, but Jessica Bergin drew a walk to push across Mason. Pinch hitter Kayla Cilley had a golden opportunity to either tie the game or close the gap with the bases still full of Great Danes, but the sophomore struck out to end the frame.
After Creasy went yard in the top of the fifth, UAlbany attempted to rally again by loading the bases for the second consecutive inning. Kothe and Mason each singled and advanced an extra base on a wild pitch. Michelle Connors drew a walk to put three on with two down, but Kelley got herself out of trouble again by inducing a groundout. Creasy clubbed her second solo home run to add insurance in the seventh.
Radford's Kelley was credited with the victory and improved her record to 8-3 this season after striking out four hitters and giving up four hits, two runs and two walks. UAlbany's Marissa Powell got the start and lasted two innings. She surrendered seven hits, six runs, including five earned, and issued a walk to drop to 0-5 on the year with the loss. Allie Weiser gave up seven hits, three runs, including two earned, and did not issue a walk in five innings of relief. She also registered one strikeout.
The opening game of the tournament began as a pitchers' duel between UAlbany's Weiser and Kent State's Reynolds. The best chance for either team to score by the midway point came in the fourth when the Golden Flashes used two singles and a sacrifice bunt to place runners on first and third with only one out. But the Great Danes got out of the jam by catching both runners trying to steal, which was capped by Walraven's throw to gun down Lauren Mokler at home.
Kent State (7-9), which won its sixth straight game after dropping nine of its first 10, was able to break through by plating all three of its runs in the fifth. Batting with the bases loaded and two outs, Jessica Carmichael hit a two-run single to right center which put runners on the corners. Despite failing an inning earlier, the Golden Flashes successfully completed a double steal to extend their lead and seal the outcome before Weiser fanned Ashlee Hein for the third out.
Kent State's Reynolds, a two-time Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year, improved to 5-8 by tossing her second no-hitter of the spring. She registered 13 strikeouts and only issued two walks. UAlbany's Weiser fell to 1-2 on the season in the losing effort. She surrendered eight hits and three runs. She walked three batters and fanned one.
UAlbany (2-8) will close out the tournament by playing two games against crosstown-rival Siena tomorrow. The teams will first meet at 10 a.m. to conclude the round-robin portion of the event before matching up again in the consolation game at 12 p.m.
