Women's Soccer Blanks Vermont, 1-0; UAlbany in Tie for Third in America East Standings

Albany, N.Y. - Junior forward Katie Grant scored her first goal of the season midway through the second half in leading UAlbany to a 1-0 victory over Vermont in America East Conference women's soccer action on Sunday, Oct. 24 at Varsity Field. The Great Danes moved into a tie for third in the league standings, their highest finish ever, and will be the fourth seed for the conference postseason tournament.
Both teams had their chances to find the back of the net in the first half. Haley Marks almost put Vermont ahead in the opening minutes when she attempted a shot that hit off the crossbar. Chelsea DeVerna took a through ball from Chrissy Klepper and made a strong bid to put UAlbany on the scoreboard with only the goalkeeper to beat later in the frame, but her shot headed to the far post bounced just wide of the net. The teams went into the recess with UAlbany holding a 10-4 advantage in total shots.
After coming up short on several more opportunities, the Great Danes were able to break the scoreless deadlock in the 70th minute. Amy Harrison, a freshman defender, came down the right sideline and placed a cross that Grant punched into the top left corner of the net. Harrison was credited with her first career assist and point on the play.
Vermont (2-16-0, AE 1-7-0), which outshot UAlbany in the second frame, applied pressure the rest of the way and appeared to have tied the match in the waning minutes on a corner kick taken by Jess Herbst. However, the goal was called back because a Catamount player was whistled for a foul after heading the ball out of goalkeeper Breanna Maggio's hands. Maggio stopped a late shot taken by Emily Milbank, which allowed the hosts to hold on for the one-goal win.
UAlbany (9-7-2, AE 4-2-2) outshot Vermont, 15-11, while the Catamounts had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Maggio made two saves on 11 chances to earn her seventh shutout victory of the season for UAlbany. Vermont's Alyssa Kelly turned away eight of the 11 shots she faced in the losing effort.

Paw Prints: UAlbany set a Division I single-season program record by registering its ninth victory, beating the previous standard of eight set in 2009 ... Six of the team's nine wins this season, including its last three, have come by 1-0 decisions ... The Great Danes are also guaranteed to have a winning season for the first time since 1988 ... UAlbany earned the No. 4 seed for next week's America East Conference Tournament and will host a postseason match for the first time as a Division I program when it entertains fifth-seeded New Hampshire in the first round of the league's championship event on Thursday, Oct. 28.
