Softball Opens Conference Play at Binghamton

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany holds a 7-13 record headed into the first weekend of conference action.
  • With an 0-9 start to the season, the Great Danes closed the Make It Happen Games with a 5-4 win over Bethune-Cookman (Mar. 2).
  • UAlbany participated in the GW Invitational (Mar. 8-9) hosted by George Washington in Washington, D.C. They played for two wins and two losses. Both wins came against Manhattan and both losses to the host, GW.
  • The Great Danes closed tournament action at the Mount Softball Invitational in Emmitsburg, Maryland. They won three of the four games with two of the wins coming in six innings against the host, Mount St. Mary's.  
  • Most recently, UAlbany added a split doubleheader at Army for their first midweek doubleheader (Mar. 19).
  • Freshman Ava Beal has become a recent leader to the Great Dane offense. With nine starts, she is hitting .364. She is currently tied for third in the conference.
  • Sophomore transfer Taylor Quinn (.322) and freshman Charlotte Lomb (.306) follow to make it three hitting over .300.
  • Overall, Quinn leads the team with a .850 OPS, 19 hits, three doubles, three triples, and seven RBI. Not only does she lead the team but also leads the conference in triples.
  • Junior Deanna Grahek is tied with Quinn in RBI while redshirt-senior Victoria Vilarchao and freshman Vanessa Meyers have also hit three doubles each.
  • Taking full advantage of getting on base, senior Caitlyn Frederick leads the conference with nine stolen bases. She is ranked second on the team with 16 hits.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Three UAlbany pitchers are sharing time in the circle.
  • Redshirt-senior Kate Powers leads with four complete games and 47.0 innings pitched. Powers ranks fourth in the conference with a 2.98 ERA.
  • Freshman Hailey Errichiello is close behind with three complete games and 40.2 innings pitched.
  • Freshman Hayley Wieczerzak has pitched just 31.2 innings but owns the team-high with 45 strikeouts. She has struck out at least 10 batters in two different games this season.

ABOUT BINGHAMTON
  • The Bearcats are the only team in the America East to start conference play with a winning record, 14-9.
  • Through the first two weekends of competition, Binghamton held a 5-5 record. Adding two additional weekends - the Make It Happen Games (Feb. 28-Mar. 2) and the James Madison Invitational (Mar. 7-9) - the Bearcats added seven wins and three losses.
  • Most recently, Binghamton went 2-1 at Mercer in Georgia (Mar. 14-15).
  • Two Bearcats are hitting over .300 - Emma Lawson (.368) and Brianna Santos (.342). 
  • Lawson leads with a team-high .951 OPS and seven doubles. Elisa Allen is close behind with a .865 OPS while tallying a team-high 21 RBI and six home runs.
  • In the circle, Roberts owns a team-low 1.98 ERA while leading with six complete games, 63.2 innings pitched, and three shutouts.
  • Roberts and Olivia Kennedy share team lead with 56 strikeouts each. Kennedy is right behind Roberts with five complete games and 51.0 innings pitched.
 
SERIES AGAINST BINGHAMTON
  • The Great Danes lead the series, 56-15.
  • During the 2024 season, UAlbany and Binghamton met four times - a three-game series and a postseason contest.
  • UAlbany won the series, 2-1, splitting the Saturday doubleheader and winning the rubber match in five innings.
  • The Great Danes also won the postseason game and defeated second seeded Binghamton in the Winner's Bracket Championship, 6-3.
 
PICKED FIRST
  • The Great Danes were picked to finish first in the 2025 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll
  • UAlbany earned 23 points with three first-place votes.
  • Binghamton was close behind UAlbany with 22 points and two first-place votes.
  • Kate Powers and Mary Kate Murray made the first-ever preseason all-conference team.
 
2025 PRESEASON AWARDS  
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • Binghamton leads the conference with the only winning record (14-9).
  • UAlbany follows with a 7-13 record. Bryant is close behind with seven wins in 21 contests.
  • Maine and UMBC are tied with six wins each. The Black Bears have 16 losses while the Retrievers have lost 19 games. 
  • UMass Lowell has won three games in 16 contests.
