Short Story:
The University at Albany men's lacrosse team fought hard on the road against Virginia on Tuesday afternoon, ultimately falling to the Cavaliers, 12-9.

Key Stat Lines
  • Daniel Kesselring led the team with four points, scoring two goals and adding two assists.
  • Silas Richmond and Jackson Palumb also scored twice each.
  • Cade Galko scored his first collegiate goal with the long pole. The defenseman finished tied for the team lead (Max Neeson) with six ground balls, adding a caused turnover.
  • CJ Schwarz led the Great Danes at the X, going 13-21.
  • Landon Whitney got the start in net and had a career outing, notching 17 saves.

Head Coach Scott Marr: "I certainly loved our effort to keep battling back, but at the same time we hurt ourselves with some careless turnovers that ended up in the back of our net. When we can figure out a sixty-minute game we can be a dangerous team, and we will!"

How it Happened:
  • Virginia scored the first goal of the game 40 seconds into the contest off the stick of Griffin Schutz. The Cavaliers scored again one minute later on Charles Balsamo's first goal of the year.
  • The Cavaliers extended the lead to 3-0 shortly after on a goal from Truitt Sunderland.
  • UAlbany's James Reid scored the first for the Great Danes with nine minutes remaining in the first on a bouncer.
  • Silas Richmond, who scored seven goals last year at Virginia, scored UAlbany's second goal on a feed from Daniel Kesselring to make it 3-2 late in the first.
  • Virginia scored back-to-back goals early in the second to push the lead back to three goals. With 8:30 left in the first half, the Cavaliers pushed the lead to four goals on a score form McCabe Millon.
  • Daniel Kesselring got the Great Danes back on the board with 5:30 remaining in the first half, scoring on a strong individual effort.
  • Shortly after, Jackson Palumb found the back of the net on a transition goal started by Landon Whitney on the defensive side.
  • Virginia answered within the next minute when Sunderland scored his third of the afternoon.
  • The lead went back to four goals, 8-4 with two minutes remaining in the first on a score from Thomas Mencke.
  • The first goal of the second half came exactly three minutes in when Cade Galko scored with the long pole. It was the first goal of his collegiate career.
  • Virginia responded with back-to-back goals a few minutes later to put the Cavaliers ahead by five, 10-5.
  • Koleton Marquis nabbed his first of the afternoon midway through the third, making it 6-10.
  • UAlbany scored back-to-back goals late in the third to cut the lead to just two goals. Palumb and Kesselring both scored their second of the afternoon.
  • Virginia scored the first goal of the fourth quarter about five minutes in, making it 11-8.
  • UAlbany's Richmond had a highlight-reel goal with 5:50 on the clock, getting the Great Danes back in the game.
