Baltimore Bound, Softball Heads to UMBC

ALBANY, N.Y. - The UAlbany softball team heads on the road for a weekend series at UMBC.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany is 24-11 with a 9-5 America East record.
  • The Great Danes began the season at NC State's Wolfpack Classic (Feb. 16-17). Accumulating one win in two games over Iona, UAlbany fell in both games against the ACC host.
  • At the annual Spring Games competition (Mar. 1-3), the Great Danes added a 4-1 record. 
  • In their first doubleheader of the season, UAlbany split the results against FDU (Mar. 9).
  • Moving on with the UMBC Spring Invite (March. 15-16), the Great Danes notched a 3-1 record with games against Niagara and Wisconsin. After a shutout against each team on Saturday, UAlbany added two one-run games on Sunday, including a no-hitter against Wisconsin.
  • In their first conference series, the Great Danes swept Maine with three victories, including one shutout (Mar. 30-31).
  • UAlbany went 2-1 against UMBC to win the series (Apr. 6-7). After the single-game win on Saturday, the two teams split the doubleheader on Sunday.
  • During a midweek doubleheader, the Great Danes won both games at UMass Lowell (Apr. 9) before falling in a three-game series at Bryant (Apr. 13-14).
  • Most recently, UAlbany defeated Binghamton at home (Apr. 20-21). After splitting the doubleheader on Saturday, the Great Danes won the rubber match for the series win.
  • UAlbany has added six non-conference wins with a doubleheader sweep over UMass (Mar. 27) and Army (Apr. 23) and single-game victories over Providence (Apr. 18) and CCSU (Apr. 25).

AT THE PLATE
  • Redshirt-junior Victoria Vilarchao leads the team with a .373 batting average. 
  • Graduate students Morgan Petty (.371) and Caitlyn Mitros (.369) follow closely.
  • Mitros owns a team-high with 41 hits while Petty leads with nine home runs and 33 RBI.
  • Graduate student Maddi Petrella has hit 11 doubles to share the lead in extra-base hits with Petty (17). With five doubles and five home runs, Vilarchao also has double-digit multi-base hits.
  • Sophomore Deanna Grahek, senior Jordan Nastos, and Mitros have hit one triple each.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Graduate student Wendi Hammond continues to serve as the Great Danes' starting pitcher.
  • Hammond leads with 135.0 innings pitched, 16 complete games, 17 wins, including four shutouts, and 93 strikeouts. 
  • Redshirt-junior Kate Powers follows with eight complete games, 72.0 innings pitched, seven wins, three of which are shutouts, and 40 strikeouts.
  • Junior Dominique Prevette has pitched for nine strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched.
  • At the UMBC Spring Invite, Powers and Hammond combined for four complete games, including two shutouts and a no-hitter. Allowing just one earned run throughout the competition, Hammond ended the weekend with a 0.00 ERA while Powers tallied a 0.64 ERA.
  • In their AE-opening series, Powers pitched a complete game shutout for just the second time this season. She allowed only one hit and one walk on her way to a 0.00 ERA in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. 
  • Against Binghamton, Hammond pitched two complete games for the series win. Pitching just two walks in 12.0 innings, Hammond tallied a 0.00 ERA against the Bearcats.
 
ABOUT UMBC
  • The Retrievers are 19-18 on the season with an 8-7 conference record.
  • After splitting a season-opening doubleheader against Saint Peter's (2/16), UMBC went on to compete at the UNCW Tournament (Feb. 23-25) and the UNCG Tournament (Mar. 7-10) and host the UMBC Spring Invite (Mar. 14-17).
  • After three wins - Hofstra (3/19), Coppin State (DH) (3/20) - the Retrievers started conference play with three wins against Maine (Mar. 22, 24). 
  • UMBC continued conference action with three losses at Binghamton (Mar. 29-30) and a 1-2 record at UAlbany (Apr. 6-7)
  • With series against UMass Lowell (Apr. 13-14) and Maine (Apr. 20-21), the Retrievers added four wins and two losses.
  • In between league series, UMBC added losses to Towson (4/10) and Maryland (4/17).
  • Four Retrievers lead with a batting average over .300. Ella Squaires leads the bunch with a .395 batting average. Amaya Carroll (.348), Amya Lundy (.324), and Ashley Della Guardia (.303) follow.
  • Just below .300, Emily Riggs owns a team-high 32 RBI and six home runs. She adds five doubles just behind Jerzie Nutile and Lundy's team-high six doubles.
  • Della Guardia is close behind Riggs with 25 RBI, five home runs, and four doubles.
  • In the circle, Kya Matter has pitched 12 complete games with a team-high 126.1 innings pitched and 126 strikeouts. Nutile follows with three complete games, 59.2 innings pitched, and 57 strikeouts.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE RETRIEVERS
  • The Great Danes lead the series, 48-23.
  • Earlier this season, UAlbany went 2-1 to win the series at home. Morgan Petty (2) and Victoria Vilarchao (1) combined for three home runs throughout the three-game weekend.
  • During the 2023 season, UAlbany and UMBC met on two different occasions - three games in the regular-season series and two games during the championship tournament.
  • Throughout the regular-season series, the Retrievers won the split, 2-1. After the team split the doubleheader, UMBC won an eight-inning game to win the series.
  • In both contests during the 2023 America East Championship Tournament, including the championship game, the first-seeded Retrievers earned the win.
  • In each of the last two championship games (2023 and 2022), UMBC took the victory over UAlbany.
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • Bryant is winning 80% of their conference games to lead the conference.
  • Binghamton follows with 10 wins in 14 games.
  • UAlbany rounds out the top three with a 9-5 AE record.
  • UMBC sits just above .500 with an 8-7 league record.
  • UMass Lowell owns three wins in 13 AE contests.
  • Maine rounds out the conference with one win (1-14).
