Men's Lacrosse Defeats Hobart 14-10

Score: UAlbany 14, Hobart 10

Location: Tom & Mary Casey Stadium in Albany, N.Y.

Records: UAlbany (1-4) | Hobart (2-4)

Short Story: Graydon Hogg leads men's lacrosse to its first victory of the season, 14-10 over first-time opponent Hobart, scoring five goals, including three in the fourth quarter.

Key Stats Head Coach Scott Marr: "We're pleased with the week of practice that we had and the outcome today.  We looked deep into our game and worked on some areas where we had been struggling.  We cleared the ball today 18 of 19 times, and we only had 10 turnovers.  Those were the two categories where we really wanted to improve.  We really took care of the ball.  We had a lot of contributions from a lot of different guys.  We're really excited for Jezahd Hall, who came in and faced off and gave us some good energy with his play.  We're really please we got a win and now hopefully we'll get number two next weekend."

How it Happened
  • The University at Albany men's lacrosse team returned to Tom & Mary Casey Stadium on Saturday after playing each of their previous three games on the road.  The Great Danes hosted Hobart for the first meeting in history between the two programs.
  • UAlbany was 0-4 on the season, with one-goal losses to #20 Colgate, at Drexel in overtime, and at UMass, with their other defeat at Penn by four.  Hobart was 2-3 with wins over Canisius and Robert Morris, and with a five-goal defeat against #20 Colgate.
  • Graydon Hogg kicked things off early for the Great Danes, scoring unassisted less than two minutes after the opening faceoff.  Hogg's goal started a 4-0 run for the Great Danes over the first eight minutes.
  • Hobart got on the board for the first time with 6:15 remaining in the first quarter.  Neither team scored again for nearly five minutes, when Alex Pfeiffer scored to put UAlbany up 5-1 with 1:25 left on the clock.
  • Hobart scored with 51 seconds remaining in the first to close the quarter trailing 5-2, and scored a second-consecutive goal early in the second to close within two.
  • Scoring slowed through the early part of the second quarter until Amos Whitcomb scored with 7:20 remaining, followed immediately, just 16 seconds later, by a Hobart goal from Troy Bartheleme.  Pfieffer scored his second goal with 3:52 before the break to give UAlbany a 7-4 halftime lead.
  • The Great Danes nearly scored an eighth goal in the first half, if not for a defensive save from the Statesmen's Nolan Firth, who prevented the ball from rolling into the net after it got past goalkeeper Elhanan Wilson.
  • Four minutes into the third quarter, Hogg scored his second goal, man-up, to put the Great Danes ahead by four.  Hobart responded with three goals in just over 90 seconds to close within one, 8-7, with 8:24 remaining.
  • Silas Richmond scored off a setup from Daniel Kesselring to briefly interrupt the Statesmen's charge, but Hobart scored twice over the final 5:29 of the quarter to tie the game at nine heading into the fourth.
  • Chris Crapanzano scored unassisted to retake the lead for the Great Danes, only for Hobart to score four minutes late to tie the game at 10.  Ryan Doherty finished a setup from Crapanzano with 7:53 to go to put UAlbany up 11-10.
  • Hogg sealed the game for the Great Danes, scoring three goals in the final 7:10.  Hogg finished with five on the day, while three of his teammates, Doherty, Pfeiffer, and Whitcomb, each scored twice.
  • UAlbany outshot Hobart 46-30, and won 35 ground balls to Hobart's 28.  The Great Danes also held a 16-12 advantage on the faceoff.
