SHORT STORY: The Great Danes found an eight-inning game-one victory before the Black Knights took game two in seven, Wednesday evening.
GAME ONE
SCORE: UAlbany 11, Army 10
KEY STATS
- Freshmen Sara Anderson and Deanna Grahek were the most well-rounded Great Danes throughout the first game. Each tallied two RBI and two runs while going 2-5 in the batter's box.
- Senior Morgan Petty tied the rookies with a team-high two RBI.
- Tallying three hits from five at bats, senior Caitlyn Mitros owned the best batting average.
- Junior Jordan Nastos and sophomore Caitlyn Frederick tied Grahek and Anderson with the team-high two runs.
- Pitching the final three innings, sophomore Amelia Freitas pitched her first win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Batting second, Caitlyn Mitros hit the first single of the day.
- Army took a two-run lead before the end of the first.
- After a scoreless second inning, the Great Danes scored their first run with an RBI from Morgan Petty.
- UAlbany followed up their one-run third inning with a two-run fourth inning.
- With two runners on base, Deanna Grahek hit a single to right center to drive in junior Caroline Srokowski and Sara Anderson.
- Tying the score in the bottom of the fifth, the Black Knights cleared the bases with a grand slam to take a 7-3 lead.
- Unable to get on base in the sixth, the Great Danes worked one batter at a time to tie the score in the top of the seventh.
- Loading the bases with the first three batters, Petty advanced the runners one base each for the first of what proved to be four runs in the inning.
- Anderson and sophomore Sierra Fretz each added an RBI as they reached with a fielder's choice before senior Wendi Hammond notched the final hit of the inning for the seventh Great Dane run.
- The UAlbany defense came together to hold the tie, and the possibility of a win, when the final out came while the bases were loaded with Black Knights.
- Just like in the seventh inning, the Great Danes worked batter-by-batter to take a four-run lead, 11-7, ahead of the bottom of the eighth.
- Army added three RBI in the eighth but UAlbany tallied the final out while holding the one-run advantage for the win.
GAME TWO
SCORE: Army 7, UAlbany 3
KEY STATS
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Great Danes started the scoring in the first inning when Maddi Petrella tallied the third single of the inning.
- Army took a 4-1 lead before the end of the first.
- After a scoreless second inning, UAlbany closed the scoring gap with two runs in the third.
- With two on base, Petrella grabbed her second hit of the contest to drive in Jordan Nastos. Sara Anderson followed with an RBI from a Morgan Petty run.
- The Black Knights answered with two runs in the bottom of the third.
- Deanna Grahek opened the fourth with a double before the Great Danes loaded the bases but Army held off the advance to leave three runners on base.
- UAlbany added a single in each of the fifth and sixth innings but the team was unable to take advantage of the base runner in both innings.
- West Point extended their lead by one run in the sixth inning.
- Unable to get on base, the Great Danes went three and out in the top of the seventh as Army earned the 7-3 win.
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue on the road for a conference series in New York - Binghamton (April 8-9).
