SHORT STORY: After a rough start to the day, the Great Danes started to earn hits in the sixth inning of the first game to split the doubleheader against Binghamton, Saturday.
GAME ONE
SCORE: Binghamton 4, UAlbany 2
KEY STATS
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Binghamton earned the first hit with their leadoff batter but a sacrifice bunt and two strikeouts later and the Great Danes headed back to the dugout for the second inning.
- After a scoreless second, UAlbany ended the third inning with a double play from freshman Deanna Grahek and Jordan Nastos but not before the Bearcats took a 3-0 lead.
- UAlbany tallied its first hit in the sixth inning with a bunt from Nastos. Her single put two runners on base after graduate student Chloe Lewis earned a base on balls.
- Caitlyn Mitros loaded the bases with a second-straight Great Dane hit.
- Morgan Petty hit a fly ball to center field to drive in the first run before Maddi Petrella added an RBI with a single down the left-field line.
- A one-run game, the Bearcats added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
- Unable to complete the comeback, UAlbany fell, 4-2, in game one.
GAME TWO
SCORE: UAlbany 5, Binghamton 2
KEY STATS
- Senior Morgan Petty and sophomore Sierra Fretz led with two RBI each.
- Fretz went 2-2 in the batter's box. Petty and Caitlyn Mitros tied the utility player but both had more at-bats - 2-4 for Petty and 2-3 for Mitros.
- Petty notched her third home run of the season.
- Fretz added the lone double of the day.
- Allowing no earned runs, redshirt-sophomore Kate Powers compiled the seven-inning complete-game victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Great Danes started off hot, putting two on base with a walk from Jordan Nastos and a single from Caitlyn Mitros.
- Morgan Petty drove in the first UAlbany run with an RBI single.
- After a scoreless second, UAlbany added three runs in the third to take a 4-0 advantage.
- Putting two runners on base with two singles from Nastos and Mitros, freshman Sara Anderson drove in Mitros with a single down the left-field line.
- Sierra Fretz followed with a two-run single to close the third-inning scoring.
- The Bearcats closed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
- Fretz added a hit with a double in the fifth but was left on base.
- The Great Dane defense held two Binghamton runners, in scoring position, on base to stop a possible tie in the bottom of the sixth.
- UAlbany secured the win when Petty hit a home run for what proved to be the final run of the game.
NEXT: The Great Danes will close the series with a single game on Sunday (April 9).
