How it Happened
- For the first time as America East opponents, the University at Albany women's soccer team played a conference game against Bryant at the Bulldogs' home field in Smithfield, Rhode Island. It was UAlbany's first visit to Smithfield since the 2010 season, a 2-0 victory for the Great Danes.
- Pressing early, the Great Danes drew a corner kick in the fourth minute of play. UAlbany's defense did not allow Bryant to take a shot until the sixth minute, saved by Great Danes' goalkeeper Gabriella Terranova, but offensively, UAlbany's first shot didn't come until the ninth minute when Bryant keeper Kathryn McNeil saved an effort by Hailey Hnis.
- Bryant pushed their tempo throughout the game, getting called for six offsides violations, the first of which came in the seventh minute of play. Their high pressure paid off for the first time in the 34th minute when Hailey Koons put away a setup from Samantha Breton initiated by McNeil.
- Bryant led 1-0 at the break, but UAlbany had outshot the Bulldogs 6-4. Both goalkeepers had made two saves in the first 45 minutes.
- Terranova prevented a second Bryant goal early in the second half. The Bulldogs initiated a breakaway but Terranova charged off her line to knock the ball away before Bryant could get off a clean shot.
- A second goal did come for Bryant in the 66th minute, off a shot from Makayla Griffin from the top of the UAlbany box, putting the Great Danes in a 2-0 hole.
- The Great Danes continued to apply pressure, however, outshooting Bryant 13-6 in the second half. In the 73rd minute, Sydney Kofton ripped a shot from long range, forcing McNeil to punch the ball over the crossbar and out for one of UAlbany's six corner kicks.
- UAlbany's last, best scoring chances came in the 81st and 88th minutes. First, Olivia Piraino fired an attempt low and to the right, forcing McNeil to make a diving, one-handed save. After two shots by Selma Elverum and one by Tiffany Bernot, Ashley Ladner's last shot of the game hit off the Bryant crossbar and away. Bryant went on to win by the same score, 2-0.Â
Next: UAlbany hosts UMBC on October 12.
