Cannata Tallies 800 Wins, Softball Takes Series Against Hartford

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes saw 13 hits in a game three win to take the weekend series over Hartford, Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After tallying six outs with seven batters in the first two innings, Lové Drumgole notched the first hit of the day with a single in the top of the third.
  • Morgan Petty opened the fourth inning with a double but she closed the top half of the inning on base and the score remained tied at zero.
  • The Hawks took a 2-0 lead with a home run in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Senior Maranda Jimenez started pitching in the fifth inning, taking over for starting pitcher redshirt-senior Briana Garrett.
  • UAlbany saw two more singles, one in the sixth and one in the seventh, but the team was unable to cross home in the first game of the series.

KEY STATS
  • Maranda Jimenez notched two straight home runs and Morgan Petty knocked one over the fence.
  • Petty led the team with four RBI; graduate student Katie Falotico followed with three RBI.
  • Three Great Danes tallied three hits - Petty (3-4), Jimenez (3-5), and freshman Sierra Fretz (3-4).
  • Junior Wendi Hammond pitched 6.2 innings with five strikeouts.
  • This victory marks head coach Chris Cannata's 800th career win with the Great Danes.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alexis Phillips started out taking a walk before she crossed home on a Morgan Petty double.
  • After a groundout from Maranda Jimenez put Petty on third, Katie Falotico hit a sacrifice fly to tally her first RBI of the game.
  • With a 2-0 lead, the Great Danes tallied three-straight outs, including two strikeouts from Wendi Hammond, to head back to the dugout.
  • Sierra Fretz opened the second inning with a single and, on a bunt from Lové Drumgole, scored.
  • For the second time, Phillips garnered a base on balls to put runners on first and second.
  • Morgan Petty tallied the first home run of the game to extend the Great Danes' lead to 6-0 with two outs in the second inning.
  • The very next pitch turned out to be a home run for Maranda Jimenez.
  • The UAlbany defense closed the inning with a double play to hold their shutout advantage, 7-0.
  • Fretz opened the third inning with a single but the rookie was held to third base and did not score.
  • Jimenez once again hit a home run on the first pitch to make it two home runs in a row for the senior.
  • For the second time in the game, the Great Dane defense tallied three-straight outs in the fourth inning.
  • The Hawks knocked a second home run on the day to close the UAlbany lead to 8-4 in the fifth inning.
  • The final two innings saw two runs each from the Great Danes. Sophomore Caroline Srokowski tallied an RBI in the sixth while Falotico grabbed two with a single in the seventh.
  • UAlbany ended the game with a double play and a 12-4 victory.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will return to Albany, N.Y. to host their final five home games of the 2022 season. UAlbany will begin with crosstown rival, Siena, on Thursday (April 21) before hosting UMass Lowell for senior weekend (April 23-24).
