Softball Splits Day Two in Florida

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes' bats were on fire as softball defeated Georgetown and fell just short of Long Island, Saturday.
 
GAME ONE

KEY STATS  
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Phillips opened the hitting with a double in the bottom of the first. 
  • Petty followed with a double of her own to drive Phillips home and give the Great Danes a 1-0 lead.
  • After a scoreless second inning, the Hoyas gained four runs to take a 4-1 lead headed into the bottom of the third.
  • After Phillips got on base, Falotico hit a double for an RBI and, eventually, scored to close the lead. UAlbany entered the fourth inning down, 4-3.
  • With two on base, Garrett tallied a strike to send the runners back to the dugout.
  • After allowing just one hit in the top of the fifth, Phillips and Petty joined forces once again for two-straight doubles and a run from the former to tie the score at 4.
  • The UAlbany defense notched three-straight outs to head straight back to the dugout for what would prove to be their final inning at the plate.
  • Drumgole, Mitros, Phillips, and Petty all hit singles to get on base in the sixth inning. Phillips sent Drumgole across home plate while Petty hit Phillips home.
  • After closing out the seventh inning with another 1-2-3 top half, the Great Danes took the victory, 6-4.

KEY STATS  
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Petty began the Great Danes' offense with a double in the first inning. 
  • The contest remained scoreless through the first five innings.
  • Hammond (second), Lové Drumgole (fourth), and Schuyler Ossman (fifth) each hit a single in their respective innings but UAlbany was unable to score.
  • After Petty opened the sixth inning with a triple, Maddi Petrella hit a sac fly to bring her home and score the first run of the game.
  • The Sharks answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Hammond hit a homer for the Great Danes to score a second run but it was not enough and Long Island took the 5-2 win.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will close their time at the 2022 Spring Games tomorrow, March 6, with a 9 am first pitch against Southern Mississippi.
