Key Stats

  • Three of UAlbany's four corner kicks came in the first 20 minutes
How it Happened
  • UAlbany visited the defending America East regular season and tournament champion Vermont to close the 2022 regular season on Thursday.  The Great Danes had clinched their spot in the postseason, and could have earned either the four- or five-seed.  A win and either a draw or loss by UMass Lowell would clinch the four-seed for UAlbany and hosting privileges in the America East quarterfinal round.
  • In the fifth minute, Ashely Ladner played the ball middle towards Marisa Tava, who one-touched a shot from the top of the Vermont box low and to the far post.  Vermont goalkeeper Erin Murphy made a diving save, sending the ball out of bounds for a Great Danes corner kick.
  • Tiffany Bernot served the ball into the box on the ensuing corner kick, finding Iola Cotter.  Cotter's header fell towards Selma Elverum, who headed the ball downwards and towards the goal.  Sahara Zingano broke through the scrum and pushed her shot into the back of the net to put UAlbany up 1-0 early, in just the sixth minute.
  • Elverum and leading-scorer Emily Jozak had additional opportunities to score in the 18th and 19th minutes, respectively.  Both freshmen fired their shots into the low right corner of the goal, but each was met by Murphy.
  • The first half ended with the Great Danes holding the same 1-0 lead.  UAlbany had narrowly outshot Vermont 11-8, putting seven shots on target.  UAlbany also drew three corner kicks in the first period, all of which came in the first 20 minutes.
  • Vermont's defense locked down following the halftime break, holding UAlbany to just five shots in the second half.  On the offensive side, Vermont managed 11 shots of their own.
  • In the 76th minute, the Catamounts broke through to tie the game at one when Lauren DeGroot, off setups from Fiona Doherty and Torie Snyder, beat UAlbany goalkeeper Megan Hart low and to the left.
  • The game ended in a 1-1 draw, locking UAlbany into the five-seed for the America East Tournament.
Next: UAlbany will visit four-seed UMass Lowell on October 30 for their America East quarterfinal matchup.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
