Baseball Wins Game One on a Walk-Off in Doubleheader Split vs. Hartford

Game One Score: UAlbany 3, Hartford 2

Game Two Score: Hartford 4, UAlbany 0

Location: Varsity Field in Albany, N.Y.

Records: UAlbany (16-19, 14-14) | Hartford (15-13, 15-13)

Short Story: Brad Malm hit a walk-off sacrifice fly that drove in John Daly during game one of Saturday's doubleheader split against Hartford.

Coach Jon Mueller"Today felt like playoff-type baseball games: Low scoring, great defense and excellent pitching by both teams. I thought Ray and Anthony were great today, but we just weren't able to muster anything offensively against Dombkowski who was really sharp today. We still came away with a split and we are looking forward to a new day tomorrow."

How it Happened Game 1
  • Hartford started the game with a first inning RBI single that gave the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. UAlbany earned its first three runners in the first three innings from walks, but no one advanced further than second base.
  • Jason Bottari produced UAlbany's first hit of the game in the fourth inning, followed by a Bram Malm double. With runners on second and third, Johnny Marti hit a sacrifice fly that tied the game 1-1. The next at-bat Josh Gurnack hit another sacrifice fly that gave UAlbany a 2-1 lead.
  • After a scoreless fifth inning, Hartford tied the game with a Nik Pagan single that drove in Derek Tenney to tie the game 2-2.
  • Unable to score any more runs, the game headed to extra innings tied 2-2. In the top half, Hartford had a runner on second, but Rob Manetta got the next batter to pop out.
  • In the bottom of the eighth inning, Malm produced the game-winning sacrifice fly that drove in John Daly to secure UAlbany's 3-2 game one victory.
  • Manetta earned his second win of the season with two shutout innings in relief.
How it Happened Game 2

  • Hartford finally broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning when John Thrasher scored from second base during a sacrifice bunt play. The Hawks added another run with a single and took a 2-0 lead.
  • The Hawks added two more runs, one in the eighth and ninth inning, both on a wild pitch to take a 4-0 lead.
  • In the ninth inning with one out, Brad Malm hit a shallow flyball to center field that Thrasher dove for to make a no hitter-preserving catch.
  • Dombkowski recorded the final out via strikeout to earn a complete game no hitter, 4-0 game two win, and doubleheader split against UAlbany.
Next: UAlbany will honor seven seniors before Sunday's doubleheader against Hartford. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and the games cap off the Great Danes' final home series of the season.
