Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against CCSU to Open Season

Records: UAlbany (2-0) | CCSU (0-2)

Short Story: The University at Albany softball team began its 2021 season with a bang, sweeping CCSU in a doubleheader. The Great Danes hit eight home runs throughout the day, three of them coming from sophomore Morgan Petty.

Coach Chris Cannata: "It was great to be back on the field after such a long layoff and such a tough year. We showed a lot of grit today, and also came away with several things to improve upon going into our first full weekend of games."

Key Stats Game One:

Maranda Jimenez pitched a strong opening game, going 5.0 innings while only allowing one run (unearned) on one hit with four walks and eight strikeouts. Jimenez also 1-2 at the plate, launching a two-run home run.
Morgan Petty went 2-3 with two home runs and four RBIs.
Briana Garrett went a perfect 3-3 at the plate.
The Great Danes ended up registering 10 hits on 21 at-bats.

Wendi Hammond pitched six strong innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts.

How it Happened Game One:

Hammond got the first RBI of the season for the Great Danes with a solo home run to center in the second inning.
Petty hit one over the fence in the third, sending a deep shot to center to put UAlbany up 2-0.
Jimenez was next to join the early-season home run club in the third inning, hitting a two-run shot and scoring Madison Petrella.
Petty hit her second long ball of the afternoon in the fourth, this time scoring Caitlyn Mitros and Briana Garrett for three more RBIs.
Garrett singled in the fifth, scoring Caroline Srokowski. Schuyler Ossman followed with a sac fly to right, scoring Hammond
CCSU's Dugas crossed the dish in the bottom of the fifth after an error from UAlbany for the Blue Devils' lone run of the game.

How it Happened Game Two:

Barkevich picked up where the team left off, sending one over the fence in the first inning to put UAlbany on top 1-0 early.
Petty notched her third homer of the day in the third, sending one over the left field wall.
Hammond drove in a run via a sac fly in the third, scoring Madison Petrella.
CCSU struck in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs off a double and a fielder's choice.
The Great Danes got back to their home run ways later in the ballgame, with Barkevich launching her second of the game in the fifth and Driver sending one over the fence in the sixth to make the score 6-2.
CCSU's Dugas hit a home run in the sixth to bring the Blue Devils within three.
UAlbany tacked on some insurance in the final frame, with Garrett and Ossman both picking up RBI singles.
CCSU was able pick up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, capitalizing on UAlbany errors.

Next: UAlbany travels to face Mount St. Mary's for two doubleheaders this Friday (Mar. 12) and Saturday (Mar. 13).
