Head Coach Leigh Howard: "Today was a fantastic way to come out and honor our seniors. We put our stamp on the game early with a phenomenal goal from Olivia and kept the pressure on UMBC throughout. To be able to convert on our chances is something we've been striving towards all season and we earned that today. It was particularly special getting to have two seniors score in Jasmine and Christina, with Jada chipping in on an incredibly unselfish play to set Christina up."
Â
Coach Howard on the Seniors: "These seven seniors have a lot of personality and an undoubted presence in this program. They bring tremendous energy and that's something that we will surely miss in years to come. We're very proud of what they have achieved, be it individually or collectively."
Â
How it Happened
- Before the game, UAlbany honored the seven members of its 2021 senior class:Â Caitlyn Adams, Chloe Argenziano, Christina Cernuto, Jada Colbert, Jasmine Colbert, Kelsey Murphy, and Amanda O'Brien.
- UAlbany got on the board quickly, in the fifth minute, when Olivia Piraino advanced up the field herself, fired a shot from 20 yards out, and beat the keeper top netting to give the Great Danes an early 1-0 lead.
- In the 35th minute, Jasmine Colbert scored her eighth goal of the season off a long through ball from Marisa Tava, giving the Great Danes a 2-0 lead to take into halftime. The Great Danes' second goal of the day marked just the third time this season they had scored two or more goals.
- Devon Schmitt scored a goal in the 57th minute off a header from free kick attempt from Tava, who notched her second assist of the game.
- Cernuto scored in the 79th minute, off a setup from Jada Colbert, notching her first goal of the season, to put UAlbany up 4-0. Cernuto's goal matched the Great Danes' highest-scoring output of the season so far, a 4-3 victory over Yale in September.
- In goal, Cassandra Coster recorded 10 saves, one shy of her career-best, and recorded her third shutout of the season.Â
Next: UAlbany closes the 2021 regular season with two games on the road starting October 24 at NJIT.
