Highlights:

  • Celeste Verdolivo went the distance in game one, racking up three strikeouts in the win. Verdolivo owns a 5-3 record this season.
  • Maranda Jimenez earned her second win of the season in game two against The Mount, striking out one in 4.1 innings of work. Chloe Lewis game in in relief, fanning two batters across 2.1 innings.
  • Kelly Barkevich paced the offense, hitting .667 (2-3) with three RBI.

Recap:

The Great Danes were able to break open the scoring in game one thanks to a solo shot from Chelsea Henige in the top of the first inning.

Celeste Verdolivo retired four straight batters until Lindsay Heinze drove a two-run homer over the fence in right to give her team a 2-1 advantage. However, Verdolivo would force The Mount to go three-up-and three-down in the fourth, allowing her team to pull away, 4-2, in the fifth on an RBI triple from Katie Falotico.

Mount St. Mary's threatened in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate, but the Great Dane defense retired the side to secure the 4-2 outcome.

In game two, Falotico helped the Great Danes jump out to an early lead, getting aboard with a double in the first and eventually scoring on an RBI single by Henige. Barkevich then tagged her first run of the day with a double to left center, before Mariah Miramontez plated a run to give her team a 3-0 edge.

The Mount cut the difference to two runs in the home half of the second inning off an RBI single, before Barkevich's two-run shot put her team ahead 5-1 after three.

Mount St. Mary's tacked on a single run in the fifth, but Chloe Lewis would retire the final four batters to secure the 5-2 victory.

Maranda Jimenez and Lewis split time in the circle, combining for three strikeouts. Jimenez (2-3) was awarded the win after allowing just one run in 4.1 innings of work.

Up Next:  The Great Danes, who are 7-7 this season, are back in the state of Maryland this weekend for the La Quinta Inn & Suites BWI Classic hosted by UMBC.
