Baseball Slips, 7-2, In Rubber Match At Chicago State

CHICAGO – In Sunday's rubber match at Cougar Stadium, the University at Albany baseball team endured a 7-2 defeat to Chicago State, giving the Cougars a 2-1 edge in the weekend series. The Cougars improved to 5-13 on the season, while UAlbany dropped to 2-7 overall.
Senior righty Matt Gallup (0-1) gave the Great Danes six innings on the mound, allowing five runs and seven hits, while striking out three. Charlie Peltz tossed the seventh and eighth frames, charged with two runs and four hits, while striking out one, and Terry Dugdale came out of the pen to record the final three outs of the inning.
Offensively, UAlbany totaled seven hits led by Trevor DeMerritt's 2-for-4 effort with an RBI.
The Great Danes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Will Miller belted a double down the left field line and DeMerritt knocked an RBI single to left with two outs.
In the fourth, UAlbany made it 2-0, as senior Craig Lepre drew a leadoff walk, Garrett Longhurst followed with a single to right, and freshman John Banes ripped a run-scoring double to left field.
However, the Cougars responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, as they strung together five consecutive singles and capped the inning with an RBI groundout.
Chicago State's Robert Swenson led the Cougars' sixth inning at-bats off with a double to left and he scored on Jared Patterson's sacrifice fly, making the score 5-2.
The hosts tacked on a pair of insurance runs, plating one in the seventh on two hits, and one in the eighth on a back-to-back singles and a fielder's choice.
UAlbany returns to action Tuesday, traveling to New Britain, Conn. to take on Central Connecticut State at 11:30 a.m. and Marist at 2:30 p.m.
