Albany, N.Y.- Thursday's doubleheader against Siena was highlighted by UAlbany's Charlise Castro's walk-off grand slam, in game one, in the bottom of the seventh en route to a UAlbany victory over Siena, 7-5. The Great Danes would take game two with a five-run sixth to give UAlbany the "eight-run" rule to defeat Siena, 10-2, in six innings on Thursday, March 29.
In game one, Siena (6-13) would grab the early 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs in the innings. Shannon Jones and Megan Volz went back-to-back with home runs to lead off the inning. Then after two quick outs, Stepanie Viggiano singled up the middle then was followed by Kayla Kaminsky's two-run homer.
UAlbany (15-7) chipped back in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to two, 5-3, with a sacrifice fly from Lauren Alcorn to drive in Katie Wambold, who led off the inning with double.
After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh from Brittany MacFawn, UAlbany began its bottom of the seventh rally. Taylor Franich began with a single down the left side, Vicky McFarland reached on a fielder's choice as Franich beat the throw to second to keep both runners on.
Diane MacDowell dropped down a bunt single to load the bases. Katie Wambold then reached on a fielder's choice as Siena's pitcher Jessika-Jo Sandrini made a play at home to get Franich out. Then Charlise Castro would hit the game-winning grand slam to give the Great Danes the 7-5 victory.
In game two, UAlbany quickly jumped on Siena's Amanda Filippazzo with five runs in the bottom of the first via the small ball with a mix of walks, singles and stolen bases.
Siena would look to begin its rally in the top of the fifth with two runs of its own but UAlbany came charging back in the bottom of the sixth with another five-run inning to reach the "eight-run" rule.
Brittany Schwieger (7-2) went the distance, going six innings allowing just two runs (both unearned) on one hit and striking out eight.
UAlbany continues its 2012 schedule against Maine, in its three-game series, starting on Saturday, March 31 in a doubleheader.
