Fairfax, Va.- UAlbany softball finished the Cherry Blossom Classic strong, blanking Cornell, 1-0 after Brittany MacFawn's second complete-game shutout performance and recording her third 10-plus strikeout game. The Great Danes fell to Bowling Green, 1-0, in game one of Sunday's two game slate with Brittany Schwieger going the distance, allowing one run on three hits and striking out seven.
In game two against Cornell, Vicky McFarland went 1-for-6 in the contest, scoring the games only run after stealing consecutive bases to get in scoring position.
MacFawn (4-2) would pitch seven innings, scattering just four hits and striking out 12 batters. Four of the seven innings pitched, MacFawn would throw 1-2-3 innings.
Game one was a pitching duel between UAlbany's Brittany Schwieger and Bowling Green's Jamie Kertes. Kertes would get the better of the two, allowing on four hits over seven innings and striking out four. Schwieger would only allow three hits, but two of them came in the bottom of the second to score the games only run.
In the bottom of the second, Bowling Green's Katie Yoho started the inning off with a single and followed up with a stolen base during Shelby Fink's at-bat. Fink would then slap a double to right field to drive in Yoho for the game's only run.
UAlbany finished the Cherry Blossom Classic going 4-1 and improve its overall record to 11-6. The Great Danes begin league-play next weekend on the road against UMBC.
