Rock Hill, S.C.- UAlbany softball split its games on Saturday in the Adidas Invitational, defeating host Winthrop in the top of the eighth, 5-4, but falling to Bowling Green, 3-2. Brittany Schwieger went eight innings to grab her third victory of the season, allowing four runs and striking out nine batters against Winthrop. Charlise Castro hit her third and fourth homeruns of the season, each against Winthrop and Bowling Green. The Great Danes go to 4-5 on the season and will finish the Adidas Invitational on Sunday, March 11 against UNC-Wilmington.
After falling behind 1-0 after three innings to host Winthrop, UAlbany took a commanding three-run lead by scoring four runs, two in the fourth from a Castro blast to right center and two in the sixth by a Lauren Alcorn two-run single, to go up 4-1 after six.
Winthrop would respond with a two-out three-run rally in the seventh to tie the game, 4-4.
The Great Danes would grab the lead, 5-4, off of a wild pitch from Winthrop's Stephanie Watson to allow Diana McDowell to score from third after her leadoff walk. UAlbany would hold on to the lead with Schwieger pitch give up a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth but would close the door after with three consecutive groundouts.
In game two, UAlbany's Brittany McFawn would get in trouble early giving up three quick runs in the first. Bowling Green started the first with a hit-batsman, a single, two quick outs, then a three-run blast from left fielder Yoho to go up, 3-0.
The Great Danes Castro would pull the team within two, 3-1, with her fourth homer of the season to center. Katie Wambold followed with a double to left center and would driven in with a single up the middle by Alcorn to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.
Bowling Green's Kertes would shut the door with a three-inning save for her fourth of the season.
