Boston, Mass. - Katie Wambold hit a walk-off single to score Kristine Bill in the bottom of the ninth to lead UAlbany to a 2-1 win over Binghamton on the first day of the America East Conference Softball Championship at the BU Softball Field on Friday afternoon.
Binghamton took an early 1-0 lead, scoring one run in the top of the first, as Jessica Bump hit a lead-off double and came home on a sacrifice fly by Deannie Plemon. UAlbany made a strong defensive play to hold the Bearcats in the second inning. With two runners on, Wambold made a snag on a line-drive ball hit into the air and turned the double play to get the Great Danes out of the inning unscathed.
UAlbany got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth, as Jess Bergin drew a walk and stole second, but Binghamton's Rhoda Marsteller induced strikeouts from Lauren Alcorn and Kristine Bill to end the inning. The Great Danes then loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, and reliever Kate Price came into the circle in relief with one out and one runner on base. Price issued a walk before a Bearcat error loaded the bases for the Great Danes. Price issued a fastball strikeout with a full count to sit down Melissa Herndon and end the UAlbany threat.
UAlbany tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the loss in regulation. Alcorn recorded a base hit up the middle, and was replaced on the base path by pinch runner Allison Haan. Due to a Binghamton fielding error, Haan advanced to third, getting in position to come home on an RBI single by Andrianna Walraven to knot the game at 1-1.
Brittany MacFawn earned the win in the circle for the Great Danes, throwing a complete game with six strikeouts. Price took the loss after two and two thirds innings of work, allowing both of UAlbany's runs, while scattering five hits and issuing four strikeouts.
Second-seeded UAlbany (26-21) will face off with the host Boston U. (33-16) in the winner's game at 11 a.m. on Friday. Binghamton (22-22) and UMBC (25-24) will play in the first elimination game of the day at 1:30 p.m.
