Brittany MacFawn Records Perfect Game in DH Sweep of Binghamton in A-East Softball Action

Vestal, N.Y. - Brittany MacFawn threw a five-inning perfect game with five strikeouts in the second game to lead UAlbany to a doubleheader sweep of Binghamton in America East Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at East Gym Field. The Great Danes won the first game, 4-3, in eight innings, before posting an 8-0 win in the nightcap.

It took an extra inning, but UAlbany was able to come from behind to secure the win in the first game. The Great Danes struck first with one run in the first inning, as Andrianna Walraven made it home on a sacrifice fly by Katie Wambold, after recording a triple. Binghamton tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single by Deannie Plemon. The Bearcats would break the tie with a single run in the fifth on a homer by Meghan Tucker.

UAlbany then took a one-run lead back in the seventh, as pinch runner Alison Haan scored the tying run on a fielder's choice, while Wambold recorded her second RBI of the game, sending Kristine Bill home later in the inning. The Bearcats responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run on an RBI single by Tucker to send the game into extra innings. Melissa Herndon led off the inning with a home run to left center, providing the only run the Great Danes would need. MacFawn came in for the save in the bottom of the frame, striking out two to seal up the first-game win.

After a one-inning warm-up in game one, MacFawn went to work in game two, shutting down the Binghamton hitters, while using a powerful offensive surge to win the game in five innings. Gina Mason drove in the first run of the five-run first inning, while Kylie Apostolina recorded a two-RBI double later in the inning to give UAlbany a 3-0 lead. Herndon drove in the final two runners of the first frame with a single to centerfield to give the Great Danes a 5-0 advantage after one.

UAlbany tacked on one run in the second on a solo home run by Walraven, and scored two additional in the third to seal the win. Lauren Alcorn knocked an RBI single to score Herndon before Lindsey Stout scored Jess Bergin with a sacrifice fly to center. Kristen Emerling took the loss for the Bearcats, allowing six earned runs while issuing five strikeouts.

UAlbany (12-17, AE 5-0) and Binghamton (12-11, AE 3-2) will complete the three-game series on Sunday, starting at noon.
