Orono, Maine – Andrianna Walraven went 3-for-3
with one run scored to lead UAlbany to a 2-1 win over Maine in the three-game
series finale on Sunday afternoon at Kessock Field.
The Black Bears would
keep UAlbany off the scoreboard early thanks to a great defensive effort in the
top of the second inning. With two outs in the top of the frame, Jess Bergin drove
the ball into left center, sending Kylie Apostolina home, but Maine relayed the
ball to catcher Jenny MacDowell, who slapped a tag on Apostolina to end the
threat. Maine then took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Brynne Davis slapped
a single into center field to score Meghan McLain.
The Great Danes would
bounce back and tie the game in the top of the third. With two outs in the
inning, Walraven stroked a single into center and would advance to second on a
wild pitch. Katie Wambold then hit a ground ball to third base and reached on a
Maine error, allowing Walraven to round third and score. UAlbany would plate
another run in the top of the fourth to set the final 2-1 score. Melissa
Herndon started the rally with a double into center field, and was advanced on
an Apostolina sacrifice bunt. Bergin then grounded out to the shortstop
allowing Herndon to score the winning run.
Brittany
MacFawn picked up the win for the Great Danes, giving up just one run on three
hits while striking out two in a complete-game performance. Beth Spoehr took
the loss in the circle for Maine (16-25, AE 6-6), going seven innings while
giving up just two runs and scattering seven hits while fanning two.
UAlbany (17-18, AE 8-1) will return
to action on Wednesday, hosting Dartmouth in a non-conference doubleheader at 3
p.m.
