Softball Splits A-East Doubleheader With Stony Brook; Pitching Staff Allows Two Runs

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Kat Smith blasted a three-run homer and recorded four RBIs to lead UAlbany to a 9-1 victory over Stony Brook in the nightcap of an America East Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday, April 24 at University Field. The Seawolves won the first game, 1-0, in the first meeting between the schools since last year's conference tournament.
After dropping the opener, UAlbany wasted no time scoring in the nightcap by plating a run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. Gina Mason was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Smith hit a slow grounder to first, allowing Nicole Kothe to come home.
The Great Danes scored three more times in the third to give themselves a four-run lead. After Mason doubled to right center to put two runners in scoring position, Smith blasted her fourth homer of the season over the fence in left center.
Taking advantage of three errors and a wild pitch, the visitors gave themselves a comfortable lead by scoring three times in the sixth inning. Jessica Bergin hit a leadoff homer to give UAlbany a 5-0 advantage. Two defensive miscues by the Seawolf defense put runners on the corners before Kristine Bill scored on a wild pitch. Andrianna Walraven's single to left allowed Diane MacDowell to advance to third, and the sophomore scored on an error by the catcher.
UAlbany added two insurance tallies in the seventh before the Seawolves scored an unearned run to avoid being blanked in the bottom of the final frame. Bergin drove in a run on a double to center field and scored on the next play when Bailey Van Deest reached on an error by the shortstop. Bernadette Tenuto's RBI single put Stony Brook (24-14-1, AE 7-4) on the scoreboard and produced the final outcome.
UAlbany's Leah McIntosh earned the victory in the circle and improved to 6-5 this season. She allowed 10 hits and one run which was unearned while fanning five hitters and issuing only one walk. Stony Brook's Casey Jacobs, who pitched the first three and two-thirds innings, was tagged with the loss and fell to 4-3. She gave up five hits and four runs. Colleen Matthes relieved the senior, hurling the final three and one-third innings and surrendering five runs, including two earned, in addition to four hits.
The first game showcased a pitcher's duel between UAlbany's Marissa Powell and Stony Brook's Alyssa Struzenberg. A homer to dead center by the Seawolves' Kendall Blumenthal in the second inning produced the game's only run and was all the hosts needed to seal the victory.
The Great Danes had several chances to get on the board. Smith and Bergin hit consecutive one-out singles in the fourth inning to put the go-ahead run on first. However, Struzenberg struck out the next batter and induced a fly out to end the threat.
Van Deest gave UAlbany life in the seventh when she belted a one-out double to center field to put the tying run in scoring postion. After Kylie Apostolina reached on a fielder's choice, Walraven drew a walk to put the go-ahead run on base for the second time in four innings. Once again, Struzenberg held her ground and forced the next batter to end the game by lining out to left.
Stony Brook's Struzenberg, the league's pitcher of the year in 2008, boosted her record to 16-6 by registering her eighth shutout of the season. She allowed four hits while striking out seven. UAlbany's Powell suffered the loss despite allowing only four hits and one run. The senior, who dropped to 6-10 this spring, fanned eight batters and did not issue a walk.
UAlbany (16-20, AE 7-7) and Stony Brook are slated to play the rubber match of the three-game set tomorrow at noon.
