UAlbany Softball Splits Final Two Games of Weekend Series With Binghamton

Albany, N.Y. - Kat Smith blasted a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as UAlbany rallied to post a 5-4 win over Binghamton in America East Conference softball action on Sunday, March 28 at Albany Field. The Great Danes dropped the series finale by a 6-4 score.
The first game, which began yesterday and was suspended after the fourth inning due to darkness, was picked up at noon today with the Bearcats leading by a 4-2 score. Binghamton jumped out to a four-run lead in the top of the fourth. After the first two batters flied out, Stephanie DeLuca and came home a play later on a double to left center by Kelly Schuldt. Meghan Tucker singled to third base on the next play, but a throwing error afterwards in the infield allowed DeLuca to score and keep the inning going. Colleen Whitaker singled in a third run and came home one play later when Stephanie Valencia tripled to right center. A popup which was fielded cleanly by Andrianna Walraven at short ended the inning.
UAlbany chipped away at the lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit in half before the game was suspended. Kat Smith hit a one-out double to left to start the rally. Jessica Bergin, who hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th in the series opener, then singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. A successful double steal plated Smith for the Great Danes' first run before Katie Wambold singled in Bergin.
Allie Weiser only allowed two hits in three innings when the game was resumed on Sunday, which set the stage for the Great Danes to complete its second comeback in as many outings in walk-off fashion. Walraven reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to start things off. Nicole Kothe flew out to left for the first out before Michelle Connors was hit by a pitch to put two on with one out. After Gina Mason struck out swinging for the inning's second out, Smith came up to the plate with one last chance. Despite falling into an 0-2 hole, the catcher came through by belting a three-run homer that sailed well over the fence down the line in left to give the Great Danes their second walk-off win by using the long ball.
UAlbany's Weiser picked up the victory to improve to 4-2 this season. She surrendered four runs, but only one which was earned, and eight hits while striking out six and issuing one walk. Binghamton's Rhoda Marsteller was tagged with the loss and fell to 6-3 overall. She surrendered five runs, including just one which was earned and seven hits. The freshman also fanned six and gave up two walks.
For the third time in as many games, the Bearcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the series finale. Phillips went yard twice by hitting a solo shot in the second and a three-run blast in the third. As it had all weekend, UAlbany started to rally by scoring twice in the bottom half of the third. Batting with one out and the bases loaded, Mason hit a two-run single to center. The center fielder also bobbled the ball on the play with the two runs in, which allowed the junior slugger to take second on the play. However, pitcher Kate Price got out of any further trouble by forcing the next two batters to line out.
After Binghamton (11-7, AE 1-2) scored an extra run on a solo homer by Whitaker, UAlbany tacked on two more runs in the fourth to make it a 5-4 game. Kylie Apostolina and Wambold each singled to start the inning and were sacrificed over to second and third by Diane MacDowell. A double down the left field line by Kothe, who had three hits in the contest, plated both runners before Connors popped out to end the inning.
A one-out single by Deannie Plemon to deep center with two runners on allowed Binghamton to take a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. However, this time the Great Danes were unable to complete a third rally and went down in order to end the ballgame.
Binghamton's Kristen Emerling was credited with the victory and improved to 5-1 this year by hurling 3.2 innings in relief. She surrendered two hits, no runs and struck out three batters while issuing no walks. Price, who started the game for the Bearcats, lasted 3.1 innings. She was held accountable for four runs and seven hits. Price also registered one strikeout and one walk. UAlbany's Leah McIntosh got the nod to start and suffered the loss. The senior dropped to 3-2 on the year after giving up four runs and three hits in three innings of work. In addition, McIntosh struck out four Bearcat hitters and walked two.
UAlbany (8-9, AE 2-1) returns to action on Wednesday, March 31 when it visits Bryant for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
