Women's Volleyball Splits Matches Against Middle Tenn. & FIU at Miami/FIU Invitational

Miami, Fla. - Teresa Coppiellie recorded 14 kills and nine digs to lead UAlbany to a 3-2 win over Middle Tennessee State in the Great Danes' first match of the FIU/Miami Invitational at the James Knight Complex on Friday afternoon. Later in the day, Coppiellie tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs as UAlbany dropped a 3-1 decision to Florida International.

After dropping the first two sets to Middle Tennessee with identical 25-19 scores, the Great Danes recorded a 25-19 win of their own in the third set. UAlbany held on for a 25-21 victory in the fourth and cruised to a 15-5 win in the deciding set.

Coppiellie led three Great Danes in double-figure kill totals, as Valerie Sourbeer and Casey Wright recorded 13 and 12, respectively. Brooke Stanley, the reigning America East Conference Setter of the Week, posted a match-high 43 assists to go along with six digs and four kills. Laurie Gonzalez led UAlbany defensively with 12 digs.

Ashley Mead led the Blue Raiders with a match-high 24 kills. Izabela Kozon added 12 kills for Middle Tennessee, while Leslie Clark finished with 41 assists, seven kills and seven digs. Janay Yancey helped the Blue Raiders out block UAlbany, 13-6, with nine total blocks in the match. Brynne Henderson led Middle Tennessee defensively with eight digs.

In the second match of the day against Florida International, the Panthers claimed a 25-17 win in the first set before UAlbany rallied back for a 27-25 win in the second. Florida International then cruised to 25-14 and 25-16 wins in the final two sets to seal the win.

Coppiellie tallied her fourth double-double of the season against the Panthers, while Sourbeer recorded her second straight double-figure kill match with 11 kills. Stanley finished with 33 assists and nine digs, while Gonzalez led the team once again with 11 digs.

Olga Vergun led four Panthers with double-digit kills, finishing with a match-high 17. Jovana Bjelica finished with 16 while Isadora Rangel added 15. Andrea Lakovic recorded 10 kills and a team-best five block assists. Natalia Valentin recorded a double-double with 55 assists and 16 digs, while Chanel Araujo totaled a match-high 20 digs.

UAlbany (4-4) will take on co-host Miami on Saturday afternoon at 6 p.m. on the second day of play. The Great Danes will close out the tournament with a match against Florida State on Sunday.
